GOP Climate Denier To Celebrate Park Service Centennial Amid Melting Glaciers

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), a self-proclaimed climate change “skeptic,” is scheduled to visit Montana’s Glacier National Park on Thursday in celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th birthday.

Daines, who would deny that humans are responsible for drastic, well-documented environmental changes at the park, will be surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks and rapidly melting glaciers.

Daines’ office announced his trip in an email advisory Wednesday, saying the senator would join other Instagram users at a park “InstaMeet,” an event that brings park visitors together to “make friends, take photos, and exchange ideas.”

The idea that man-made climate change is fueling the retreat of the park’s namesake glaciers, however, is likely not something Daines will be entertaining.

In a 2014 interview with Montana Public Radio, Daines said “the jury is still out” about whether fossil fuels contribute to climate change. He said he’s seen “very good data” suggesting there are other contributing factors, including solar cycles.

“Climate change,” Daines told the radio station, “is very real. The climate is always changing, it’s either warming or it’s cooling. The climate is dynamic, it’s not static … I think the question certainly is what part does man-made climate change factor [into] this equation, certainly with CO2 and greenhouse gases. And I think there’s just still reasonable debate here, whether or not it is a significant part of this or not.”

That kind of comment makes most climate scientists cringe. Studies suggest that 97 percent or more of scientists who are actively publishing research believe climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities.

A visit to Glacier National Park is a front-row seat to the severity of the problem. In 1850, there were roughly 150 glaciers in the area. Today, there are just 25, many “mere remnants of what they once were,” according to the National Park Service.

“If the current rate of warming persists, scientists predict the glaciers in Glacier National Park will be completely gone by the year 2030, if not earlier,” the park service writes on its website.

In a Facebook Live interview with The Huffington Post this week, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” said that during a recent trip to Glacier, park rangers told him they expect all the glaciers to be gone in five or six years.

“So it will be Sandy Hillside National Park,” Nye joked.

For anyone who runs into Daines on Thursday, ask if he’s concerned about the park losing the glaciers that have carved its landscape and have drawn more than 100 million visitors.

Daines’ office did not respond to The Huffington Post’s request for comment Wednesday.

In April, Daines was among more than two dozen Republican senators who asked Secretary of State John Kerry to cut funding for the United States’ involvement in United Nations effort to address climate change.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

Afternoon Slump Got You Down? There’s A Nap For That

There’s a reason you, like clockwork, feel sluggish when 3 p.m. rolls around each day. Scientists call it the circadian dip, and it happens because our bodies regulate periods of wakefulness and sleepiness, the latter of which peaks for most adults during the nighttime hours of 2 and 4 a.m., and the daytime hours of 1 and 3 p.m.

The good news? There’s an easy solution. We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get to the bottom of the #PowerOfSleep. Check out the video below to learn more.

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting. And when you add SleepIQ® technology you’ll know what to adjust for your best possible sleep.

I Will Still Love My Husband If He Votes For Donald Trump

Almost 18 years ago I was a liberal, vegetarian, bell-bottom-wearing college sophomore when I met my husband — a young Republican Alex P. Keaton-type if Keaton was tall, blonde and a deer hunter. Election night 2000 stands out as an almost disastrous night in our relationship as we sat together, watching the election night returns and alternately fluctuating between elation and despair throughout the night as the outcome of the election swung back and forth.

Having learned our lesson, in the three subsequent elections we each calmly watch returns in different rooms of our home. We disclose campaign contributions to each other, always with the possibility of our joint bank account being used to fund two opposing campaigns. We never put out campaign signs (except for the occasional support of the Detroit Zoo) because, as we joke, we do not need to let the whole neighborhood in on our dysfunction. He has suggested more than once that we just stop voting so we do not spend time waiting in line just to cancel each other out, but as I get immense joy out of the experience of voting he begrudgingly shows up at the polls.

With the disclaimer that our state does not have registration by party affiliation and, even if it did, I am not sure either of us would choose to affiliation, we are an interparty marriage. Only nine percent of married couples are Republican-Democrat. But even in these divisive times, with rhetoric flying and a news cycle that seems to be accelerating faster than a boulder falling of a cliff, I love my husband and respect his right to cast his vote even if he decides to cast that vote for Donald Trump.

Suffice to say, #imwithher. But equally as importantly, I am against him. Since the reasons to be against Donald Trump have filled voluminous pages of this blog and elsewhere, I will summarize that my passion in life is improving Muslim-Jewish relations and Trump is antithetical to my understanding of my faith, my values and what it means to be an American. I think he is dangerous and bad for America. There are few superlatives that I would hesitate to use when talking about the destructiveness of Trump’s candidacy. But I will not extend these superlatives to those who vote for Trump and — in the end — I might be married to one.

This election season, my friends, my colleagues, even my mother have come up to me with the whispered question, “Is your husband going to vote for Donald Trump?” The truthful answer: I don’t know and I am not sure if he does either. Like many conservatives, he appears to be struggling between voting for a Republican candidate that does not represent his conservative political philosophies, voting for a third party candidate knowing that support may put a Democrat in the White House for another four years or just staying home, not voting and watching a rerun of South Park instead of the election returns.

When I admit that it is a possibility — even a probability — that my husband will vote for Trump, there is often a gasp or a head shake or a disapproving look followed by the sentiment that “I could never be married to someone that would vote for that man.” And while I fully grasp revulsion at Trump’s candidacy, it strikes me that when I pledged to love my husband in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer or all that other stuff, there was not an exception for the day there was a Republican candidate that I found really repulsive.

While it is beyond my abilities to explain why any person would vote for Trump, I recall back to a humiliating memory in my own life. In 2004, just weeks before the election, I was down in South Carolina at a friend’s wedding. Afterwards, several of us were knocking back yet a few more cocktails and I got involved in a political conversation with a friend’s boyfriend who belonged to a category of people that my closed-minded liberal self did not know existed – Gay Republicans.

I remember pressing him at length about his Republican identification. I was appalled that he could be faithful to a political party that rejected his civil rights. I questioned him not out of curiosity, but out of indignation and a false moral superiority that allowed me to weigh his conflicting values better than he could. Whether fuelled by this indignation or the cocktails, I kept going long passed the point where decency or common sense would have led me to change the topic.

In reality, the notion of thinking that my friend’s boyfriend was some kind of anomaly was simply uneducated and I look back on my actions with a certain amount of shame. For many people, aspects of their political philosophies, cultural beliefs and identity may clash in a way that make choosing a candidate difficult. In 2004, 23 percent of the LGBT population voted for President Bush. This year, a poll showed that 11 percent of Muslims voted for Trump in the primaries and 14 percent of Hispanics may vote for Trump in the general election.

People are complicated and the factors that lead us to cast a vote are even more so. The coverage seems to place us neatly in boxes by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, education but these are just statistics. Statistics are the business of pollsters, the lifeblood of campaigns and the source of a thousand news stories. But it is our life experience and beliefs and identity the mingle within us and help us determine which candidate to support. Just because someone comes to a different conclusion than us does not mean that there is nothing of value in that person and nothing we could have in common. In and of itself, it just means that we are casting votes for different candidates.

Every day, there are stories of people defriended over political views. While defriending in a social media context is easy enough, it is the defriending in real life that is more troubling. In this election cycle, rifts are placed in families and communities over support of a candidate. The rhetoric continues to increase in ways that do not serve our country — from cries of locking her up to naked statutes of a candidate in parks. While we can all fingerpoint as to what has caused this political climate, the better question for each of us is whether we have become part of the problem?

To those that cannot believe that I love my conservative husband or that I could continue to do so even if he casts a vote for Donald Trump, do you really think I should get divorced because of a presidential vote? If you believe Fivethirtyeight.com (which I always do), 44.1 percent of this country will vote for Donald Trump. If you cannot fathom being married to one of them, being friends with one of them or being related to one of them, is it time to ask whether you are a part of the problem? Instead of blaming the divisiveness solely on either the Republican candidate or some amorphous “other” out there, perhaps it is time to look inside.

There is a line in The American President, “How do you have patience for people who claim they love America, but clearly can’t stand Americans?” In context, this is intended as a dig at conservatives but it seems like a claim that can be levelled at all of us.

In the past 18 years, I have learned a great deal from my conservative husband. I have come to appreciate the economic philosophies that he holds paramount when choosing candidates. I have come to appreciate that sometimes his conservatism relies on an innate belief in the goodness of people whereas sometimes my liberalism can veer dangerously into paternalism. Our disagreements sometimes strengthen my own views by cutting away the surface argument and getting to the core of my beliefs while other times I have seen my beliefs moderate when faced with compelling argument from him.

If we cut out those in our lives based on a vote, we will slowly whittle our own world to an echo chamber where everyone around us simply parrots back what we assume to be true about the world. I have no doubt that this is easier. I imagine it would be fun to spend election day either rejoicing or mourning with the person that I love most in the world. I imagine that it would be nice to be in the same room on election day.

But even this year, even with these stakes, even with offense I take at Donald Trump’s words and actions, even when I genuinely fear for the safety of my Muslim brothers and sisters who are facing increased violence, I will not allow myself to give in and excise from my life those who balance their competing values differently than I balance mine. I believe that Donald Trump is dangerous for America, but I believe that letting Donald Trump divide us as Americans is even more dangerous. I fell in love with my husband almost 18 years ago and, whatever happens on November 8, I will still be in love with him. But I will not watch election returns in the same room as him.

Bali High

2016-08-23-1471979701-4140362-BaliHigh2.jpg

Although I’ve been home from Bali several weeks, I keep dreaming I’m there…the sounds, the smells, images of the people wash over me:

  • The beauty of this island full of flowers and smiling faces.
  • The gamelan music, an orchestra of percussion instruments, bells and bamboo flutes that mimic the sounds of a Bali morning – insects, birds, roosters, ocean waves.
  • The scent of incense lingering from the daily offerings of carefully crafted coconut or palm frond containers full of colorful flowers, offered to appease the lower gods and honor the higher gods.
  • The chaos of cars, trucks and motorbikes carrying whole families and goods to market passing within inches on narrow roads – made safe by the gentle toot or toot-toot that signals passing.

Immersed in the Balinese culture for two weeks, I was reminded there are so many good ways to live. We visited my friend Susan, a psychologist, who lives in Bali. There is no work for her among the locals. They are too happy. Traveling with my daughter Lisa, we mused about what keeps the people contented. Lisa wrote about it in her blog: What the Balinese do for Anxiety.

As part of their Hindu Buddhist religion, as Lisa describes, everyone prepares and dedicates offerings to the gods. Every day. In every home, store and village. Before picking us up, our drivers prayed in their family temples for our safe trips. Children learn very young to play in a gamelan orchestra, and to dance the traditional Balinese dances. The dancing is complex, physically difficult, using every body part including head and eyes, in still and flowing patterns to the sound of the gamelan, each movement carrying meaning. The dances act out familiar stories that are sometimes funny, always teaching moral lessons. Characters include the gods of good and mischief and evil. Beautifully carved sacred masks and elaborate costumes are integral to the dances.

We saw several Balinese dance performances, and one night we were treated to another traditional form of theater – a shadow puppet show. Behind the screen, which we were invited to visit, was an entire family supporting the puppeteer. He told a piece of the traditional Ramayana story – an ancient, epic Hindu story. However, he improvised the telling for the audience (our small group of Americans.) He made it modern and relevant to us, including references to surprising things like Pokemon Go!

Steeped in tradition, ritual and shared beliefs, the Balinese are warm, relaxed and friendly. Good humor abounds. They seem untroubled by questions like, “Who am I?” “Where do I belong?” and “How can I feel safe?” Those questions are answered in the context of their daily lives, living with family, belonging to compound and village, doing the daily rituals, sharing in the many large ceremonies and celebrations.

Bali is an open-hearted culture. Thinking of it makes me happy. I hope my Bali dreams continue.

Since coming home, I’ve been asking myself questions: how might we build ritual and tradition more solidly into our daily lives? How open-hearted is the United States? And – what might be an American equivalent to the gentle, respectful horn toots on the highways that keep people calm, safe and cared for?

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. What new perspective have you gained from visiting other cultures (here or in other countries?)
  2. What rituals or traditions do you practice in your life?
  3. How do they help you feel safe and connect you with others?
  4. What rituals/traditions would you like to create in your life?
  5. When will you start?
  6. How do you contribute to the open-heartedness of your culture?

P.S. I promised to follow up on how well StopJetLag worked. It worked! Stopped jetlag in its tracks. Lisa and I recommend it heartily.

Is TMJ Disorder Costing You A Good Night’s Sleep?

If you are one of the estimated 40 million+ Americans who suffer each year from chronic sleep disorders or one of the additional 20 million who experience occasional sleeping problems, you know first hand how the problem can affect your quality of life. A sleep disorder can interfere with your work, your ability to drive and your participation in social activities.

Did you know that many patients who suffer from sleep disorders are also dealing with a problem directly related to disorders in their temporomandibular joint (TMJ)? The TMJ is the joint that attaches your lower jaw, or mandible, to the temporal bone of your head. More precisely, it is where the lower jaw fits into the skull and is supported by the muscles in your face. It is the joint that allows you to chew, swallow and yawn. However, when it isn’t functioning properly it can be the root of a lot of problems.

A disorder in this important joint can cause pain and discomfort in other parts of the body and these TMJ disorder symptoms — including sleep apnea, teeth grinding and tension headaches or migraines — can impact your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Experts estimate that more than 44 million Americans have one of the several variants of TMJ disorder, or TMD, with women more prone to the condition than men. Pain when chewing is a common symptom, as are other warning signs including limited movement of the jaw or a locking sensation, ringing in the ears, jaw clicking and grating or popping of the jaw joint. These symptoms are often a result of muscle tension and misalignment in the jaw. Although minor symptoms may be relieved with a little rest, hot and cold packs, a soft diet, TMJ massage and/or jaw exercises, persistent symptoms can lead to chronic problems that disrupt your sleep and can become more difficult to treat.

Sleep Apnea

We have all seen the images of tools used to manage sleep apnea that require sufferers to sleep with a CPAP mask, making them look like a super villain or scuba diver. However, obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition. Sufferers experience obstructed airflow and stop breathing repeatedly during sleep, sometimes for a minute or even longer. This may happen from five times an hour to more than 100 in severe cases. The body is damaged by only 5 of these episodes an hour, and as we learn more, it appears that even minor episodes can cause chronic damage.

When breathing stops, the brain reacts to the situation by producing a rush of adrenalin which in turn quickens the heartbeat. Muscles in the chest then work to resume airflow and the person gasps for a breath and falls back asleep. This scenario is then repeated multiple times during the same night while the person never realizes what is occurring. That’s because they never really “wake up” but only experience a short pause in sleep. This pause destroys the normal sleep cycle cascade which is critically important to health and brain function.

More and more studies are showing a connection between TMD and sleep disturbances. In many sleep apnea cases, a misaligned jaw joint or TMJD, is actually to blame. This is because the tongue’s position is impacted by the alignment of the upper and lower teeth. When the teeth are misaligned, the tongue can block the airway as you sleep. This problem with the jaw alignment or malocclusion can cause a person to wake up frequently throughout the night.

Untreated sleep apnea causes snoring and can lead to much more serious health issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease. In addition, people with sleep apnea do not get the rest they need because, as a preventative reaction, their brains keep them from falling into a deep sleep mode.

Bruxism

Another symptom of TMD is bruxism, commonly called teeth grinding. A misalignment of the jaw can cause you to unconsciously grind or clench your teeth together.

Bruxism causes significant damage to your teeth and is something that is easily corrected with proper physiologic care. You would be surprised at how forcefully we can clench our teeth. As we are waking, the pressure when clamping the teeth together can reach about 200 pounds per square inch. However, when we are asleep, that force can reach more than 700 pounds per square inch!

Because of this force, people with severe bruxism can break their dental fillings and/or cause the outer layers of their tooth enamel to wear away, exposing the highly sensitive dentin. Additionally, this extreme jaw muscle tension can result in complications that include other TMJ disorder symptoms like lockjaw and tension headaches.

Night Headaches

When the bite and the lower jaw are misaligned, muscles are strained which can result in head pain that can mimic a migraine. This pain can be around the forehead, on the back of the head or radiating down the neck.

The same obstructive breathing that causes sleep apnea also can cause nighttime or hypertensive headaches. To put it simply, lack of oxygen can trigger a painful headache.

Many people turn to over-the-counter pain medication for headaches rather than exploring the root cause of the pain. Common signs that a headache is related to a TMJ disorder include:

● A clicking or popping sound emanating from the jaw
● A bite that feels off or does not close properly
● Complaints of snoring at night from your spouse or family
● Forward head posture

Researchers from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine found that headaches related to TMJ dysfunction are frequently misdiagnosed as tension headaches. In a study of 583 patients with frequent headaches, 82 percent of female cases and 17 percent of male cases had symptoms associated with TMD.

Finding Relief

If you think TMD could be causing your sleep problems, here are some tips you can try at home:

● Gently stretch your neck throughout the day
● Improve your posture
● Avoid chewing gum
● Gently massage your jaw muscles
● Commit to a soft diet
● Try to use other home remedies to lessen the severity of a TMD flare up
● Learn to combat stress with exercise or meditation. (Stress can exacerbate pain.)
● Move the jaw gently from side to side 10 times and then allow it to rest for a minute. Do this for 5 sets a few times a day. This will help to stretch the muscles of mastication.

Although the exercises above may help, if the system is not physiologically correct, the best advice is to get it corrected. The headaches can start as a nuisance but can eventually become incapacitating.

In my experience as a educator for TMJ dentists and clinical director at LVI Global, up to 85% of TMJ disorder symptoms can be resolved without prescription drugs or surgery. Instead, we return the jaw muscles to their natural place of physiologic rest which allows the system to function correctly. Treatment through neuromuscular dentistry strives to reduce or resolve symptoms by focusing on fixing the muscles that support the bite. The result is a dramatic lessening of muscle pain and in many cases, a better night’s sleep.

Donald Trump Jacked Up His Campaign’s Trump Tower Rent Once Somebody Else Was Paying It

WASHINGTON ― After bragging for a year about how cheaply he was running his campaign, Donald Trump is spending more freely now that other people are contributing ― particularly when the beneficiary is himself.

Trump nearly quintupled the monthly rent his presidential campaign pays for its headquarters at Trump Tower to $ 169,758 in July, when he was raising funds from donors, compared with March, when he was self-funding his campaign, according to a Huffington Post review of Federal Election Commission filings. The rent jumped even though he was paying fewer staff in July than he did in March.

The Trump campaign paid Trump Tower Commercial LLC $ 35,458 in March ― the same amount it had been paying since last summer ― and had 197 paid employees and consultants. In July, it paid 172 employees and consultants.

“If I was a donor, I’d want answers,” said a prominent Republican National Committee member who supports Trump, asking for anonymity to speak freely. “If they don’t have any more staff, and they’re paying five times more? That’s the kind of stuff I’d read and try to make an (attack) ad out of it.”

“If I was a donor, I’d want answers. If they don’t have any more staff, and they’re paying five times more? That’s the kind of stuff I’d read and try to make an (attack) ad out of it.”

In addition to the rent for Trump Tower space in Manhattan, Trump has paid his eponymous golf courses and restaurants more than $ 260,000 since his campaign and the RNC struck a joint fundraising deal in mid-May, after he essentially locked up the GOP nomination. On May 18, the day the fundraising deal was announced, Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach was paid $ 29,715; Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, was paid $ 35,845; and Trump Restaurants LLC was paid $ 125,080, according to FEC records. Such large payments were much rarer when Trump was self-funding.

It’s unclear from the campaign filings the purpose of the golf course and restaurant payments, although both of the Florida golf courses hosted Trump campaign news conferences in March. Also unclear from the filings is whether Trump is using more space in Trump Tower than he was in the spring and, if he is, why, given that his staffing is lower.

The Trump campaign did not respond to The Huffington Post’s queries.

The FEC filings show that Trump began increasing the rent at Trump Tower starting with the May 31 payment of $ 72,800. The Trump campaign paid $ 110,684 in rent on June 9, and $ 169,758 on July 10.

The campaign’s number of paid employees and consultants went from 166 in May, to 139 in June, to 172 in July. How many of those actually worked in Trump Tower cannot be determined from the FEC filings, although typically only a small fraction of a presidential campaign’s staff works in the headquarters building. Last autumn, only about a dozen of the campaign’s several dozen paid employees worked in Manhattan.

Trump continues to fly to campaign events on his personal Boeing 757 airliner, even though the aging jet burns some $ 10,000 in fuel every hour. That has made air travel one of the biggest expense categories for his campaign. In July alone, $ 495,000 went to Trump’s company that owns the plane.

Prior to May, three-quarters of the $ 59 million spent by Trump’s campaign had come out of his own pocket ― meaning that whatever Trump charged his campaign for rent was largely coming from Trump himself.

That situation is now entirely reversed. Trump’s money makes up a tiny percentage of his campaign’s spending. The bulk now comes from outside donors, both small-dollar givers and those writing maximum-limit checks of $ 2,700.

“Nobody cares when you’re spending your own money, but when you’re spending the donor’s $ 27, that could cause problems,” the RNC member said, adding that small donors especially may not be sympathetic to Trump’s extravagance. “Most campaigns run on a much tighter budget.”

For many months, Trump’s campaign prided itself on its low-rent operation. It invited reporters in to tour its headquarters on the fifth floor of Trump Tower that had once been used as production offices for “The Apprentice” TV show, which starred Trump. Photos and video from those tours show work space with unfinished ceilings, makeshift drywall partitions, and only a few campaign workers.

Commercial real estate is available in the midtown Manhattan neighborhood in the range of $ 70 per square foot annually, although Trump has charged more than that. Trump Tower rented 9,000 feet of office space in December at $ 120 per square foot, but has been unable to rent a 15,000 square-foot office that includes six terraces overlooking Fifth Avenue, even at a discounted rent of $ 90 per square foot.

Democrat Hillary Clinton has been leasing two entire floors in a Brooklyn office building totaling 80,000 square feet since the start of her campaign. The rent for that space has been about $ 212,000 per month.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

What No One Told Me About Following My Passion

Like much of my generation in America, I don’t have to worry about where my next meal will come from. I don’t have to worry about how I’ll get to work. I don’t have to worry about a safe, dry place to sleep.

So I worry about something else, with which much less of the world has the luxury of preoccupation: purpose. Some spend their days searching for food; I spend my life hunting meaning–full, but unsatisfied.

Most millennials’ basic needs have been met–a prerequisite for fulfilling our greatest potential. If we don’t make our lives meaningful, we will have dishonored and squandered our opportunity. Perhaps this responsibility explains our fixation with purpose.

We know what we want. The question is: how do we find it?

Hoping that international travel and novel experiences would infuse my life with meaning, I moved to Canada when I graduated college. There I learned, as I conclude in my essay The Myth of Wanderlust, “you can’t drive to purpose.”

So I returned home and pursued my lifelong passion of writing. For the last two years, I’ve followed a self-authored, step-by-step plan to successfully discovering, integrating and making money from my passions. A marketing position, an editing role and six months of self-employment later, I realized you can’t write to purpose, either.

Passion, I’ve learned, does not equal purpose.

Why?

Here’s a synopsis of the 8000 words I initially spewed on this question:

Passion, the way many millennials have come to define it, is self-oriented. Passion is “a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that one loves, values, and in which one invests a substantial amount of time and energy,” explains one study published in Self and Identity.

Purpose, on the other hand, is other-oriented. One Stanford study found that individuals with meaning mindsets “seek connections, give to others, and orient themselves to a larger purpose.”

Modern passion is pleasure-oriented. One influential study on passion defines it as “an autonomous internalization that leads individuals to choose to engage in the activity that they like.” In other words, passion’s answer to “Why are you doing this?” is “Because I like it.”

But meaningfulness, sums the Stanford study, sometimes involves “feeling bad”.

Passion is short-term. Though we tend to assume it’s lifelong, passion changes more than we anticipate because we change more than we anticipate. As Terri Trespicio observes in her TEDx Talk, “Passion is not a plan. Passion is a feeling, and feelings change.”

Purpose is hardy. Gritty individuals, explains one study, prioritize long-term goals. This long-term perspective, another study notes, helps give “more weight to meaning than pleasure” and solidifies self-control.

I don’t regret following my passion. In fact, I still endorse my strategy. Passions help us understand who we are and what we want. They bring vitality and joy to our days. But following your passion is a deceptively slow, uncertain way to purpose.

If I could tell myself anything three years ago when I graduated college, it would probably be this:

“Follow your passion, sure. But don’t expect it to produce your purpose.”

I help 1000+ ambitious millennials find their professional purpose with a research-packed weekly newsletter. Want in? Subscribe.

A Unique Approach To Discomfort

“Destiny is not for comfort seekers. Destiny is for the daring and determined who are willing to endure some discomfort, delay gratification, and go where destiny leads.” ~ T.D. Jakes

“We ask God for signs, wonders and miracles, but refuse to go into circumstances where we need them.” — Christine Caine

One may believe that a happy life eschews pain and discomfort by all costs. But, in truth, life opens up to us and expands when we’re squeezed and pushed through discomfort. Our emotional constriction, which creates our discomfort, begins to soften and expand when we lean into our discomfort. Moreover, our dreams are actualized through moments of confusion, doubt, fear, and uncertainty. So, when we’re pushed into our discomfort zone, we’re better able to witness and cultivate new skills that will propel us to new heights in our spiritual, emotional, and physical evolution.

How many of us can say that we have grown and transformed the most when we are “seemingly” sailing through life? Not many of us. When things appear superficially “perfect” and aligned in our lives, what could possibly ignite us toward growth and realizing God’s deeper purpose for our lives?

However, what indubitably pushes us toward greater fulfillment and purpose in our lives is when we’re tightly squeezed and pushed through discomfort. The physical manifestation of the contrast between what we deeply desire on a soulful level to what is actually showing up in our lives, creates the emotional and spiritual dissonance for us to push through and create transformation.

Transformation is accelerated in our lives through pain and discomfort. Such that, God will use different people, events, and circumstances to show up in our lives that cause us aggravation and distress, as a catalyst for growth and inspiration. Personally, I created a life that I dreamed of, living on a paradise island as a Life & Spiritual Coach & Teacher, not by coasting through life and feeling on top of the world. No. My life was radically changed when I hit my lowest point. When my pain and suffering had become enough.

Through pain and suffering, my heart opened up to greater transparency for God’s light to shine through and heal, motivate, and push me at deeper levels. Surely, the pressure was strong and tightening, but the more pressure I experienced, the harder I fought. Had I experienced continued success selling real estate in New York City, perhaps with money flowing in easily and effortlessly, and joy living in a city that stole my heart 19 years ago, I would not be living the life of my dreams right now. I’d still be living a life that was content and good, but truthfully, mediocre in the eyes of God. But, God doesn’t want GOOD ENOUGH for our lives, he wants GREAT!

So where is discomfort showing up in your life? Is it in a relationship? A job? Your living circumstances? Your finances? Your health? Or a lack of balance in your life? Consider each difficulty as a message that God has something better and more meaningful for your life. As we release the need to pity ourselves in difficult times and rather use discomfort as the catalyst toward change, we create an opportunity for greater richness and joy in our lives. Discomfort and pressure will always show up. To the extent that, although my life is greater than it’s ever been, there are newer and completely different experiences of discomfort that appear. But, with greater awareness I now recognize that my discomfort shows me that there’s still more for me to see and do in my life. This inspires me to work harder and explore my path with greater curiosity and determination.

Today, find peace with your discomfort. Embrace the stickiness. Ask for its lessons and guidance. Trust that your uneasiness is the vehicle to catapult you to places you’ve never been before. Use discomfort to your advantage in creating a life you dream of.

“The New Trump”? Or is Character Destiny? (See “The New Nixon”)

2014-02-03-BothSidesNowLogoPlaincolhirescopy1.jpg

LISTEN HERE:

By Mark Green

Trump begins the week with the WSJ urging the RNC to cut him loose if he can’t turn around his floundering campaign by Labor Day…and ends it with the Bannon-Manafort shuffle. Cooke & Lamarche laugh off the chance he can stop scratching his attention-getting-disorder itch. GOP prospects Nov. 9?

Trump’s policy & personnel. We listen to his anti-ISIS speech explaining how he’d utilize joint operations with allies, cyber-tech, intelligence-gathering — and “extreme, extreme extreme vetting” — to defeat ISIS. Charles Cooke is not against ideological screening per se “so long as it’s not religious screening” since the First Amendment doesn’t apply to non-citizens applying to get into US. Gara Lamarche notes that his policy prescriptions are precisely what the Obama administration is now doing…and his version of “extreme vetting” sounds beyond the pale.

The Host asks Cooke to tell our listeners what Breitbart News is and who its recent head, Steven Bannon, the new campaign CEO, is. “Bannon turned an insurgent libertarian right-wing site into a home for right-wing white nationalists. That is not pleasant to read or be. It’s a disgrace that a major party nominee associates with Breitbart.” He adds the the hire of Kelly Anne Conway as campaign manager is different because “she’s a good person with some talents.” (Host agrees on Conway, who was a BSN regular for a couple of years…except that her on-message assertions (Trump has “humilty”) and denunciations (HRC corrupt liar) renders her a Trumpian version of Baghdad Bob, albeit with a smile.)

Also, says Charles: “While fear-mongering often works and is done by both sides, it’s unlikely to succeed in 2016. While there are problems with the economy and crime, it’s nothing like the riots, assassinations and crime of 1968 that Nixon exploited.”

Net-net on the personnel changes? Gara argues that the Bannon appointment shows Trump wants not to win but just solidify his reactionary white-high-school male base for later commercialization. We’re reminded of the metaphor of Charles Sykes, a conservative talk show host in Wisconsin, who saw the move as an indication that Trump has entered his political hospice stage where he wants to be comforted by admirers at the end.

Can Trump’s expressed “regrets” for his name-calling and insults help warm up his bellicose persona? Maybe says Cooke, “if he can keep it up or the next three months but, even though the media wants a new story, that’s extraordinarily unlikely.” Gara: ” it’s not in his nature. ” Host: a person who’s gained fame and fortune by living like Andrew Dice Clay for 70 years isn’t very likely to turn into Ellen. Indeed, the next day he mockingly tweeted about Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner. Very presidential. And since we don’t accept declarations of innocence by defendants at face value, it would be, er, credulous to believe the self-serving words of a proven serial liar who changes his views daily.

Ok, assume polls and trends are right and she wins by eight points + — who’s likely to win the battle for the soul of the Republican Party starting Nov. 9: the Trump/Fox/Cruz crowd or the Ryan/National Review/Reformocons team? Charles has a dog in this fight and argues for the latter because “Trump is sui generis — there aren’t any Trump-like Republicans, for example, running for the Senate. And he benefited from an unusual 17 person field [where he stood out]. Successful parties after a defeat can tamp down the excesses and absorb the best of both sides. Democrats too after the election will be split — so let’s see who can best absorb its rebels.”

Gara, however, thinks that the Breitbart crowd more likely to prevail and that “Cruz could then be well positioned.”

The Host dissents from Cooke: The problem is not so much Trump but the angry reactionary base that elevated him — and presumably they’ll be as furiously anti-Hillary as they’ve been anti-Barack. Unless they’re chastised by the 6th popular vote loss in seven presidential elections, they’ll continue to self-marginalize in a country where older Fox viewers are dying off to be replaced by rising and more liberal millennials and minorities. And there’s little reason to believe that, with a Democratic president, the Democrats will be anywhere as divided as the GOP. For one example, Sanders will campaign for Clinton but Cruz won’t for Trump.

Remember Hillary? Trump is not the only nominee to try pre-Fall to fix a this week. Gara applauds the news that Bill Clinton will resign from the Clinton Foundation if his wife becomes president and it will no longer accept foreign or corporate contributions to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest. Charles isn’t impressed. arguing that it’s largely been a place for Clintonites to be employed and generate profits for them. “Do you really think that they’re grifters out to make more by raising a couple of billion to help advance health and the environment for millions of poor people in 3d world countries? Charles says, “‘it’s both.” Gara insists, “it’s public service.”

Analyze this!
Is it fair for Democrats to assume that Trump is a narcissistic sociopath and for Republicans to assume that Clinton, in Trump’s words, lacks the “stability and stamina” to be president, while Hannity on Fox runs many segments asking “doctors” whether she’s suffering seizures from a fall a couple of years ago?

Gara and Charles think both are wrong to use psychiatric terms to analyze public people not under medical care — which is now called the “Goldwater Rule” after 1000+psychiatrists and psychologists said the ’64 GOP nominee was mentally unfit to serve. Lamarche, however, notes that the Clinton’s diagnosis is especially pernicious since a woman who served four years as a traveling Secretary of State and a vigorous candidate now for 16 months is in any way incapacitated, except as some WebMD docs assert on a partisan network.

*Will Trump’s Collapse sink GOP boats? Four more Democratic senators will make Chuck Schumer not Mitch McConnell the Majority Leader, which the panel agrees is likely. Cooke thinks that three seats are all but gone — Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois — while several others are iffy, like PA and NH, perhaps NC and Arizona as well. Gara wonders “how can a Republican senator can survive if s/he has to run 8-10 points ahead of the top of the ticket? They have a very delicate dance here” because they can’t live with Trump, who’s so unpopular, but can’t live without him since they need his “low-education” voters.

A Clinton-Schumer-Pelos/or weakened-Ryan D.C. is very different from a Clinton-McConnell-strong Ryan one. While the Clinton agenda won’t be able to run the table due to the filibuster and likely House GOP majority, Ryan will have to deal more with her if his margin of 59 shrinks to say 25, which now appears to be likely.

*Conservative Books. The top three NYT non-fiction best-sellers last Sunday (and top four this Sunday) were all right-wing screeds denouncing Hillary, liberals etc. How come their books sell more than comparable liberal books? Charles — author of the serious non-screed The Conservatarian Manifesto — has some ideas: Readers with money and time are older, more likely to buy books, and skew Republican, while younger voters are less likely to pick up a book than go on-line. Adds Gara: “conservatives are more isolated, angry and aggrieved and more likely to buy a book to see their viewpoints validated.” Adds the Host: unlike MSNBC which rarely promotes an author and has fewer viewers, a show like Hannity puts on any eccentric wight-winger, plugs the book, and it jumps on Amazon.”

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Nirvana: achieved.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

    Trump: Pretending to be Presidential

Trump has again shaken up his staff. He now has had as many campaign managers as he has had wives. He previously parted ways with Corey Lewandowski, then with Paul Manafort. Now Kellyanne Conway has taken command of this “huuge” ship of state– perhaps a vessel more like the Titanic or “Ship of Fools,” rather than the “Good Ship Lollypop” image that the Trump camp is attempting to project.

Smart Republicans are jumping ship, some for political reasons and others for moral motives. My advice to Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and Reince Priebus is to get in a life boat while seats are still available– save yourself from this shipwreck.

Or is Trump really changing? Kellyanne Conway has launched a new Trump-Lite to make him look more “presidential.” Gone is the orange spray tan, make-up, or whatever Halloween substance he had on his face. Now he uses the Teleprompters that he previously ridiculed, and is out seeking big donors, something he formerly bragged he didn’t need or want.

And a couple days ago, Trump apologized (sort of), telling a crowd at a rally in North Carolina, “Sometimes, in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that, and I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues.”

However, Trump followed that ambiguous mea culpa with “But one thing I can promise you is this: I will always tell you the truth.” Of course, that statement was itself a lie. You just can’t keep up with this guy.

In fact, in December of 2015, Pulitzer Prize winning PolitiFact named him the worst lying presidential candidate, stating they have “been documenting Trump’s statements on our Truth-O-Meter, where we’ve rated 76 percent of them Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire, out of 77 statements checked. No other politician has as many statements rated so far down on the dial.” The same month Factcheck.org named him the “King of Whoppers”

The coup de grâce of Trump playing president was Friday when he and his current Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence went to flood ravished Louisiana, unabashedly using the flood victims to promote Trump as looking presidential. He did this even though Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards didn’t want politicians showboating there. A spokesman for the Governor reportedly stated, “We welcome him to LA but not for a photo-op. Instead we hope he’ll consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the LA Flood Relief Fund to help the victims of the storm.”

And Friday Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told ABC News, “It’s also presidential today to have him and Governor Pence going to Louisiana in a decidedly nonpolitical event, no press allowed, going to help people on the ground who are in need.”

What? “Nonpolitical?” Ha! If not political, why did Trump chastise President Obama for not yet going. “No press allowed?” How did we all see it if no press was allowed? And what did they do to help people on the ground? Trump was seen in Louisiana signing his autograph on his hats, t-shirts, and other paraphernalia– but did anyone a catch glimpse of him signing a donation check?

Trump may pretend to be presidential, but that doesn’t make him so. There’s an old saying “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” Oink Oink.

    Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

    2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

    This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

Back to School Means Heavy Backpacks And Back Pain

With school is just around the corner, children will be abandoning the playground and returning to the classroom. With an emphasis on providing a sound education for this young generation, children are given a literal “heavier” workload year after year. This has translated into more books and more accessories, which greatly contributes to the normalcy and reliance on carrying backpacks. However, despite their usefulness, backpacks can cause serious back pain if overloaded or worn improperly.

    2016-08-20-1471714844-4735983-Untitled.png

To understand how heavy backpacks contribute to back pain, it’s important to look at the composition of the back. The adolescent spine is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae with discs between them that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy backpack is incorrectly placed over a child’s shoulders, the weight of the bag can force the child backwards. Usually, children counteract this force by arching or bending forward at the hips, causing the spine to compress unnaturally and contributing to neck, shoulder and back pain.

    2016-08-20-1471714971-3849456-1.png

The best way to prevent lower back pain is to either avoid overstuffing a backpack. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, children should limit their backpack weight to between 10 and 15 percent of their body weight. Backpacks weighing more than this are too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This weight causes children to lean forward, affecting the natural curve in the lumbar and lower back regions resulting in variety of orthopaedic injuries.

    Dr. Ebraheim says,
“Kids these days think backpacks are moving libraries, carrying heavier weights back and forth to school and between classes without taking breaks. The weight can cause a variety of back problems including scoliosis. This is a problem not only for the child’s health but also because back pain can interfere with the learning environment. Kids need to feel healthy during the day so they can keep up with their schoolwork injury free.”

Wearing a backing improperly can also cause back injury. Many times children will sling their backpacks over only one shoulder. This uneven distribution of weight causes the child to compensate by leaning to one side. The frequent imbalance causes muscle strain. The problem can be exacerbated if backpacks have tight or narrow straps, as they can interfere with circulation and nerves.

There are, however, some simple ways to prevent your child from developing back pain. First, it’s important to monitor the weight of children’s backpacks to ensure that they are not overloading them. Second, purchase a backpack with wide, padded straps to distribute the load over the shoulders evenly. Backpacks that have waist and additional shoulder straps may also prove beneficial in transferring the load to the hips and preventing slouching. Lastly, it’s important to concentrate the bulk of the weight closest to your child’s body in the middle of the back. This will help your child achieve better posture and balance, while preventing possible falls.

Friday Talking Points — As The Turd Tornado Turns…

Some weeks, it’s tough coming up with a subtitle for these columns. Some weeks, not so much. This is one of the latter, because the juxtaposition of a colorful (to say the least) description of Donald Trump with a soap opera’s title just naturally presented itself.

The quote comes in response to Trump’s campaign shakeup, which we’ll get to in a moment. One of the new people Trump hired comes from Breitbart News, and former Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro was being interviewed by CNN’s Brianna Keilar for his response to the shakeup. Here is the transcript, for everyone’s edification:

SHAPIRO: I mean, as you probably know, I think Donald Trump’s a turd tornado, but I also understand that he has no capacity whatsoever to control himself and be this staid politician that everyone wants him to be. Telling him to double down is not necessarily terrible strategy. If he’s gonna go down, he’s gonna go down being Trump.

    KEILAR: A what tornado?

    SHAPIRO: A turd tornado.

    KEILAR: What is that?

SHAPIRO: Well, it’s like a sharknado. Except with poop.

Thanks for clearing that up, Ben! We’ll just add that to the images we never thought we’d have to think about in the world of politics (a list which has grown to epic proportions during this presidential race, it’s worth pointing out). With such an auspicious metaphor to work with, let’s see just how the turd tornado (turdnado?) turned last week.

The week began with a speech Donald Trump read off a TelePrompTer. And in a stunning development — are you sitting down? — he then did not stomp all over his message by saying monumentally stupid things for the rest of the week. No, really! True, his message was stomped all over by the shakeup news from his campaign, but this is actually an improvement for Trump. There wasn’t a single tweet or off-the-cuff statement at a rally that derailed Trump’s message this week — which has got to be a new record for him. How many days can he keep this up? We certainly don’t know, as evidenced by the fact that on Monday we wrote of the inevitability of it already happening by the end of the week — which we have to admit turned out not to be the case at all.

Before we get to the shakeup, a word about Trump’s messaging this week. He actually read three TelePrompTer speeches this week, and he seems to be improving (somewhat) on his delivery with each one. The first was on the subject of defeating terrorism and foreign policy in general. The Morning Joe program helpfully put together a mashup video of just a few of the things he said in Monday’s speech that utterly contradict what he’s said about the subjects in the past, which is pretty amusing to watch. The second was a law-and-order speech in front of a mostly-white audience, warning of the dangers of urban crime (which has been par for the course for Republicans since Richard Nixon’s time, it’s worth noting). By week’s end, Trump had made some astonishing news in the third speech, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

The campaign shakeup news was rather ominous for Republicans, since Trump pushed aside the only guy running his campaign who has had actual experience running campaigns before, and replaced him with two additions — a woman who worked for Todd Akin’s campaign (in the “outreach to women” job — you just can’t make this stuff up), and a guy who ran Breitbart News, a website for those who think that Fox News is just another part of the mainstream media’s liberal conspiracy. Yes, there are people out there who think Fox isn’t rightwingy enough, and they all apparently get their news from Breitbart. They also get plenty of conspiracy theories, but that almost goes without saying. The new theme for the campaign, as Shapiro referenced above, is going to be returning to “letting Trump be Trump.” Hoo boy. Buckle up, boys and girls!

Little-noticed in the midst of all this news was the very first poll Breitbart ever commissioned, which was intended to “unskew” all that liberal polling saying Trump wasn’t beating Clinton. The only problem was that even after all this unskewing, Clinton still beat Trump by five points. Guess they’ll have to rework that unskewing formula, eh?

But back to the Trump campaign. With Trump adding a Breitbart executive to his campaign, the rest of the Republican Party spent the entire week waiting for the other shoe to drop. Nobody knew what form it would take, but this morning that shoe hit the ground with a thump, with the announcement that Paul Manafort would be stepping down from the Trump campaign. All week long, the Trump campaign had insisted that they weren’t going through a shakeup at all, they were instead expanding the campaign by hiring more people to run things. This falsehood was exposed with Manafort’s resignation. The Trump campaign is now being run by people who have never run a national campaign for anyone before. And it’s worth pointing out that this isn’t the first such top-level shakeup in Trump’s campaign (and likely won’t be the last).

All of this news has led to noticeable glee over in the Clinton camp (and among Democrats in general). It’s easy to understand such giddiness, since Clinton’s recent polling is so strong, both in battleground states and in previously-deep-red states as well. Tim Kaine is campaigning in places like Wyoming, Idaho, and Missouri (to be fair, the first two aren’t realistic for Clinton to even hope for, as he was just fundraising there from wealthy Democrats). People are beginning to ask whether Trump’s defeat will rival Barry Goldwater’s — and it’s only August. With Trump doubling down on “being Trump,” things look pretty rosy for Hillary Clinton right now.

But there’s a cautionary tale running through the week that few inside-the-Beltway pundits have so far noticed. Could Trump actually be successfully pivoting, in the midst of the shakeup? He gave three TelePrompTer speeches, and had zero blowups this week. He didn’t say (or tweet) anything so radical it dominated the news cycle in a negative way — this during a week when naked Donald Trump statues mockingly appeared in multiple U.S. cities (more on that in the awards). He introduced his first two television ads of the general election. This is all new, for Trump. To end the week, Trump decided to pay a visit to flooding victims in Louisiana — an opportunity for him to show some compassion and “look presidential.” And in the third of those speeches he read this week, he kind-of sort-of apologized for all his previous outrageous statements. Here’s what he read off the screen:

Sometimes in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that. And believe it or not, I regret it. I do regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues. But one thing; I can promise you this: I will always tell you the truth.

Laughable as that might sound (especially that last line), this appears to be the first time Donald Trump has ever even remotely admitted any sort of mistake he’s made during the campaign. So, to review: three speeches read from prepared texts, two new television ads that will run in battleground states, one presidential-looking photo op, zero speeches ad-libbed at rallies, zero new controversial statements, and one semi-apology. That’s a much more focused Trump than we’ve yet seen. So perhaps all the Democratic celebration about his new campaign team might be a wee bit premature. Has Trump truly pivoted? Has he ridden out his own personal poopstorm? Time will tell. Perhaps this is all the final influence of Manafort, on his way out — perhaps next week Trump will return to form. But even with all the campaign shakeup news, Trump had a better week on the campaign trail than usual.

Finally, before we move along to the awards, we have to say a formal goodbye to John McLaughlin, who died earlier this week. The McLaughlin Group was a pioneer in political television, and for many (without cable subscriptions) was the only view into the contentious world that cable political shows have regularly become. With regulars on the right like Pat Buchanan and on the left people like Clarence Page, the show was always pretty freewheeling and interesting to watch. Countless political shows were inspired by their format, and McLaughlin had actually been trained as a Jesuit priest, which includes formal training in forming an argument (pro or con), so he was always able to examine strange angles and odd views that others routinely missed. OK, occasionally this veered into conspiratorial thinking, but McLaughlin usually seemed to be playing devil’s advocate (rather than “true believer”) by bringing such subjects up.

We’ll miss seeing John, and we’ll miss his show. Every year in this space, we run our year-end list of “McLaughlin awards,” since his categories were so complete and well-thought out. So we have a personal connection to the show (even if they never knew about it). So, in homage, there is only one possible way to salute John McLaughlin: with the final phrase he used to close each of his shows, to show how we will miss his presence.

    “Bye-bye.”

Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week

Occasionally, we redefine our awards, and this seems a dandy week to do so. Rather than handing out a Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week this week, we are handing out a Most Impressive Anarchist Collective Of The Week award instead. We thought that changing it to the MIACOTW award would be more appreciated by an anarchist group, who might be offended by being linked to any official political party (even in an award).

The group INDECLINE had already made a name for itself by creating the largest-ever piece of illegal graffiti, by painting a political statement on a deserted military landing strip in the Mojave Desert. That’s pretty cool, we have to admit, especially when you consider that they spent $ 20,000 creating it.

But this week, INDECLINE outdid themselves, by placing a rather unflattering statue of a naked Donald Trump in five American cities (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland, and Seattle). Being anarchists, they didn’t ask anyone’s permission, just set the statue up (and epoxied it to the ground, to make it harder to remove). This bit of political theater was even given a name: “The Emperor Has No Balls.” Reportedly, the statue didn’t, but it’s hard to tell from the available photos.

The artist, a guy from Las Vegas who goes by “Ginger,” reportedly “has a long history of designing monsters for haunted houses and horror movies.” That certainly seems like experience enough to create such monstrous statues, at least in our humble opinion.

The people behind the political theater knew their installations would be temporary. Reportedly, Cleveland was the fastest to remove it, while some in San Francisco are looking to preserve the statue in a suitable place. No real surprise there, we suppose.

Regular readers of this column will know that we are suckers for political theater (good, bad, and indifferent). As always, such theater must be judged on how amusing it is and how effective it is. On both these scales, “The Emperor Has No Balls” has to rate somewhere near the top end. It’s funny, it made a huge splash online, and now millions of people have laughed at a naked Trump provided by a group that few had ever previously heard of. All around, that’s pretty impressive, and well worth our special Most Impressive Anarchist Collective Of The Week award. Well done!

[Congratulate INDECLINE on their official contact page, to let them know you appreciate their efforts.]

Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week

This one wasn’t hard to select this week. Former Pennsylvania state attorney general Kathleen Kane easily wins the Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week award for being convicted of nine criminal charges, two of them felonies. It’s pretty disappointing when any Democrat is convicted of crimes, but when it is the person who is in charge of the entire state’s justice and law enforcement divisions, it reaches a whole ‘nother level.

The whole story is convoluted and rather sad. It began with the Jerry Sandusky/Joe Paterno scandal, widened to sexist and racist emails, and wound up in a personal vendetta Kane waged against a political rival. The scandal not only shook up the Penn State’s athletic department but also brought down two justices on the state supreme court, and even Kane’s twin sister (who, it turned out, had sent some of the emails).

At the heart of the charges against Kane was a leak of grand jury evidence that she later tried to pin on a scapegoat rather than admitting to leaking. Not only did Kane commit the crime, she also tried to cover it up, to put it more bluntly.

Kane was once considered a rising star among Pennsylvania Democrats, but not any more (to put it mildly). Among her other woes this week, we simply have to add our own Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week. This was a shameful episode in the midst of an investigation of an even-more-shameful crime, and there’s simply nothing good to say about it.

[Since Kathleen Kane has quit her office, she is now a private citizen, and our longstanding policy is not to provide contact info for people not currently serving in office.]

    Friday Talking Points

    Volume 404 (8/19/16)

We should really just be able to write “Volume 404 — Talking Points Not Found” here, but we fear few would get the joke (and it’d be awfully lazy to do so). Kidding aside, we actually do have to admit we have been rather lazy in putting together the talking points for the past month or so. This was due to the fact that all it took was repackaging what Republicans were saying about Donald Trump. No Democratic input was even necessary — just repeating the scathing things Republicans were saying was enough.

This week, we’re going to try to wean ourselves off this habit, by only providing a mere three (less than half!) of our talking points directly from Republicans slamming Trump. And we promise, our last talking point is one of the funniest we’ve come across yet, so there’s that to look forward to.

As always, use these talking points responsibly, and refrain from operating heavy machinery while doing so. Heh.

    1
       The middle finger

The Washington Post set the tone for what was going on this week, most notably in a headline to an article run immediately after the first news of the Trump campaign shakeup:

Donald Trump’s Hire Of Breitbart News Chief Is A Middle Finger To The GOP Establishment

    2
       Right back atcha…

Of course, to be fair, the number of Republicans giving Trump the finger has been growing for weeks, now.

“You can’t really blame Trump for turning his back on the GOP establishment, because they’ve been running away from his campaign in droves. The letter begging the R.N.C. to pull all money from Trump in a desperate attempt to salvage Congress, which was released last week, was initially said to have 70 signatures of Republicans on it. Now it’s got more than 100. Maybe by next week it’ll have another 50, who knows? Also last week, a member of George W. Bush’s cabinet came out in support of Hillary Clinton. Will the last Republican to leave Trump’s campaign please turn out the lights?”

    3
       Divine intervention necessary

George Shultz weighed in on Trump this week, too.

“When George Shultz — one of the most-respected Republican foreign policy voices around — was asked recently about the prospect of a Trump administration, his response was brief and personal: ‘God help us.’ Shultz is right — if Donald Trump is elected president, this country is going to need all the divine intervention it can possibly get.”

    4
       Sorry, you can’t come in

Even right-wing pundits are getting in on the act.

“What with all the news about Trump’s campaign shakeup, the content of his Monday TelePrompTer speech was all but ignored. But Washington Post conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin (whose column is even called ‘Right Turn,’ so you know where she’s coming from) hilariously took Trump to task for his concept of ‘extreme vetting.’ Rubin pointed out that Trump might just be a victim of his own program, if his ‘extreme vetting’ idea were ever to become law. Trump would fail on the metrics of ‘shares American values and respect for the American people,’ as well as falling short on being one of ‘those who we expect to flourish in our country and to embrace a tolerant American society.’ Be careful what you wish for, Donald, as you might not pass your own test quite as easily as you might think.”

    5
What, precisely, was Trump apologizing for?

The list is a long one.

“Donald Trump issued a blanket ‘apology’ this week. It was actually a non-apology, merely that he ‘regretted’ having said some things which ‘may have caused personal pain,’ but it’s as close to saying ‘I’m sorry’ as we’re ever likely to get. But his remarks were generic, with no specifics. The Washington Post then helpfully compiled a list of two dozen things he might have been referring to. Somebody needs to ask Trump which items on this list his non-apology apology covers, just to clear things up. With so many to choose from, inquiring minds want to know precisely what Trump actually ‘regrets’ having said so far.”

    6
A conspiracy theory that makes sense

The facts do seem to fit….

“Since Donald Trump began running, I’ve heard a lot of wild-eyed conspiracy theories from the left over what his plans actually were going to turn out to be. Most of these involved reading Trump’s mind and figuring out what his next move would be. Almost all of them have so far been proven hilariously wrong. My personal favorite was: ‘Trump will drop out of the primaries the minute he loses his first state.’ Or maybe: ‘Bill Clinton talked Donald into destroying the Republican Party’ — that was a fun one, right? But there’s a new conspiracy theory on the scene which actually could make a whole lot of sense. Is Donald Trump merely using a run for the presidency to launch his own branded media empire? Will ‘Trump News’ soon be on the air, competing with Fox News? Trump has reportedly been cozying up to Roger Ailes, and now he’s got the head of Breitbart News running his campaign, so it’s pretty easy to see how the effort could morph into ‘Trump TV,’ right after he loses in a landslide to Hillary Clinton. I mean, it could all make a twisted sort of sense, don’t you think?”

    7
       Score one for NYC Parks

Issuing dry press releases all day in a mundane local government department must get pretty boring. And then a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity crosses your desk….

“The funniest thing I’ve heard this week was the official New York City parks department response, after they removed a nude statue of Donald Trump which had been illegally mounted in Union Square. Whoever came up with this gem deserves a raise, or a promotion to a P.R. job where they can better utilize their obvious skills. After removing the statue, an official statement was then released: ‘NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small.’ NYC Parks certainly rose to that occasion, as it were.”

Derailment And How To Manage It

    2016-08-19-1471635426-4431424-IMG_4095.JPG

In the world of psychology, derailment describes thought processes that veer off track, go awry, stray from the thought. Like a car that has skidded off the road, the ideas fail to arrive at their destination. In the realm of politics, derailment refers to a tactic by those in power that deflects attention away from complaints about abuse or wrongdoing by introducing an alternative topic. This blog explores derailment as a diversion from a life goal, and how it’s possible to get back on course.

In his journal, the writer John Cheever alluded to a loss of continuity at a critical point in his life. “It seems that in my coming of age I missed a year–perhaps a day or an hour….The consecutiveness of growth has been damaged. But how can I go back and find this moment that was lost?” Although the impact of Cheever’s derailment extends beyond the scope of this blog, his expression highlights the common problem.

In the newly released movie, Florence Foster Jenkins, the heroine, Florence, contracted syphilis from her first husband. As a result, she didn’t bear children and was deprived of a fulfilling family life. That derailment led her to devote her life to singing and supporting the musical world with the fortune she inherited from her father.

We assume an extreme diversion is equivalent to a disaster, but the event may actually represent a chance to recover a “lost” direction or passion. The classic story of The Little Prince (recently made into a popular movie) can be viewed as a metaphorical derailment in the realm of literature. As a young boy, the protagonist of the story drew a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant. But the adults insisted that the drawing resembled a hat. Unimpressed with the child’s skill, the grown-ups redirected him from artistic to practical studies– geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. “That is why I abandoned, at the age of six, a magnificent career as an artist,” the protagonist says, justifying his profession as a pilot. Years later, his plane crashed in the middle of the desert, and he was visited by a little prince who commanded him to draw. The little prince may well represent the pilot’s imagination or alter ego that harbored his desire to become an artist.

In real life, a patient of mine, Ms. W., experienced a serious depression, a kind of psychological crash. During her hospitalization, she recalled that in her youth, she had aspired to become a singer. In the hospital, she had the opportunity to connect her depression with the long-forgotten ambition. Upon her recovery, she studied voice and became a successful musician.

Conclusion: Although we can’t undo the past, we can recognize a derailment and take action to get back on track.

To Fight Zika Beyond Florida We Need Better Sex Education

In light of the recent news that Zika virus could stay in semen for more than six months ― twice as long as scientists previously though the virus could be detected ― it’s time for the United States to ramp up its focus on the major mechanism for Zika virus transmission after mosquitos: sex.

“For the public health community, Zika represents an unprecedented emergency,” Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association in August.

“Never before, to our knowledge, has a mosquito-borne virus been associated with human birth defects or been capable of sexual transmission,” Frieden wrote. “The effects of brain damage due to microcephaly and consequences of other Zika-related birth defects are likely devastating, lifelong, and costly.”

As Zika virus spreads, with at least 55 countries and territories reporting local transmissions, according to the CDC, and the United States reporting two areas of active transmission in Florida, health officials like Frieden have called for increased safe-sex messaging, even for people outside active Zika zones.

New York City is ramping up its public health messaging on sexually transmitted infections to include Zika virus in coming weeks, The New York Times reports. The campaign will feature posters, fliers, radio and television ads, in addition to deploying community health workers to communicate the risks of sexually transmitted Zika in person.

    Florida’s sex ed blunder

But not everyone is making public health a priority. In Florida’s Broward County, which is adjacent to Miami-Dade County, where active Zika transmissions are occurring, abstinence-only rhetoric is trumping public safety ― at least for now.

According to Miami news station WSVN 7News, Broward County removed two AIDS Healthcare Foundation billboards that featured unrolled condoms reminding people that safe sex “prevents Zika transmissions.”

The Fort Lauderdale mayor’s office and tourism board pressured the company to take down the signs, Michael Kahane, a spokesman for the foundation, told the station. “They felt, I guess, that they could impact tourism,” Kahane said. “I find it completely disgusting.”

Still, neither the mayor’s office nor the tourism board is taking credit for the sign’s removal, so it’s unclear who is behind the billboard takedown.

We still don’t know enough to write strong health policies

Using condoms is key to curbing sexually transmitted infection, including Zika virus, but health experts cautioned against overstating Zika’s sexual transmission risk compared to the larger risk of transmission via mosquitos.

Travel-related Zika virus is a major concern. The CDC currently recommends that pregnant women avoid traveling to areas with active Zika transmissions and use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner has traveled to a Zika outbreak area in the last six months.

Dr. Federico Laham, the medical director of infectious disease at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando stressed that it’s also important for doctors to ask pregnant patients about their travel histories, regardless of whether or not the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present in their areas of practice.

One major challenge for health officials trying to curb sexually transmitted Zika in their respective cities is that it’s difficult to craft definitive public health and safe sex recommendations, because no one knows for sure how long Zika virus can stay active ― or remain capable of transmitting infection ― in men’s semen.

That information is “very important if you are trying to craft a prevention method to your community,” Laham told The Huffington Post. “Any couple expecting a child will live with a lot of anxiety. It’s important for health officials to deliver a clear message.”

Zika isn’t the only STI that can hurt unborn babies

For Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of medicine in the infectious disease and global health divisions at the University of California Los Angeles, focusing on sexually transmitted Zika and the risk it poses to pregnant women misses the point.

“Zika is important, but we need a much broader holistic approach to address infections in pregnant women,” Klausner said.

He cited congenital syphilis ― when a pregnant woman infected with the disease passes it to her child ― as a more common STI, with equally grave consequences. Indeed, congenital syphilis can cause severe illness, miscarriage, stillbirth and early infant death, as well as blindness, nervous system damage and deformity if left untreated.

“When things are common and they occur regularly people forget about them,” Klausner said. “We need to remind people of the day-to-day risks.”

There were 12 cases of congenital syphilis per 100,000 live births in 2014, an increase from 8 per 100,000 live births in 2012, according to the CDC.

Klausner believes defunded health departments and communicable disease programs in the wake of the 2008 recession is making it even harder to address issues like congenital syphilis and Zika virus.

He’s also frustrated by Congress, which failed to pass a Zika bill before leaving for summer vacation this year.

“You can’t trade the health of one population because of ideological views,” he said. “When Congress does come back, it’s going to be important for local constituents to demand a response.”

    The Beach Quilt

    The Beach Quilt

Set in a picturesque Maine beach town, bestselling author Holly Chamberlin’s heartwarming and insightful novel delves into the choices and changes faced by two families over the course of one eventful summer. . . Everyone in Yorktide, Maine, knows sixteen-year-old Sarah Bauer. She’s a good student and a dutiful daughter, as well as a beloved best friend to Cordelia Kane. So it’s a surprise to all when sensible Sarah reveals that she is pregnant. Though shocked, Sarah’s family is supportive. But while Sarah reconciles herself to a new and different future, the consequences ripple in all directions. Her father–a proud, old-time Mainer–tries to find more work to defray expenses. Her younger sister grapples with a secret she can’t share. Cordelia feels abandoned, and Cordelia’s mother faces the repercussions of a long-ago decision. As Sarah’s mother, Cindy, frets about how she’ll juggle childcare with her job at the local quilting store, she seizes on an idea: to band together and make a baby quilt. Piece by piece, a beautiful design emerges. And as it progresses, reflecting the hopes and cares of the women who create it, each will find strength in the friendship and love that sustains them, in hardship and in joy. . . I’ll Do It Tomorrow

I’ll do it tomorrow because there’s always a tomorrow right? I mean why rush and do it now when I can sit here tomorrow and think about it. Or maybe even leave it for a couple of days…Sound familiar?

But then there’s that feeling….that feeling of guilt that maybe I could do it now – it might mean an item crossed off my to do list…mmm, no, I don’t think I’m ready to tackle it today… I’ll add to to the list for another day…

Well firstly, you’re reading this – so perhaps you’re intrigued about trying a new perspective for getting things done – where you could feel accomplished, on target and well organised.

    What about today?
What tasks or activities have you been involved in this week that you feel confident and competent to undertake without any hesitation? Thought of a few? That’s great. Do you feel a sense of purpose and satisfaction for being able to complete these or is it just second nature? I encourage you to explore what drives you to complete these. After all, we find it much easier to complete activities that we enjoy, find easy and where we feel there is benefit and value from accomplishing them.

    Consider these questions:

    1. What are you most proud of achieving in the last week?
    2. Why does it stand out?
    3. Does it align with your values and life purpose?

Take a few moments to answer these and really connect with the feelings these bring forth. What can you learn about yourself and your behaviour towards completing the tasks associated with your answers? For example identify where your passion runs free and your determination stems from. Then, lock in these feelings so that you can call upon them whenever you need to. You might find it useful to write down a description of this or virtually place it in a tin that you can access at any time.

Now consider the things you have been putting off. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day right? Pushing today’s to do list to tomorrow only delays that feeling of having to complete the task (sometimes even feeling like a chore) you really don’t want to do. It’s time to ask yourself:

    • ·         Why am I putting it off?
    • ·         Why am I procrastinating?
    • ·         What is it about the task I don’t want to face?
    • ·         What purpose does this task serve?
    • ·         Have I signed up to something that I don’t really need to complete?
    • ·         What could I let go of?

Inside us all is this strong wiser self who feels bold and able to tackle anything that comes our way. When we connect with this persona it can help us to face the things in life we so often try to out to the back of your minds. Tapping back into the feelings of achievement I asked you to consider earlier on in this blog, how could you bring the stronger, more committed and bolder person to the forefront?

Go on, go back and look at that to-do list again and tackle it from another perspective… How amazing would it feel to get one item crossed off today and not tomorrow?

What you waiting for? Procrastination is just a moment of time so seize the day and make it count.

Medical Mistakes Make It Dangerous To Go To A Hospital

It seems like someone I know gets sick almost every week. At my age, this is expectable and acceptable. What is completely unexpected and unacceptable is how often doctors and hospitals make serious mistakes.

I have written about this in three previous blogs, each describing or explaining one or another aspect of outrageously incompetent medical care.

“Why Are Medical Mistakes Our Third Leading Cause of Death?”
    http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5888408

“High Tech Medicine Can Be Bad for Your Health”
    http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/8331406

“We Have Too Many Specialists and Too Few General Practitioners”
    http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/9040898

In this blog, we benefit from the unique perspectives of Donna Helen Crisp — a patient-victim who also happens to be a nurse, lawyer, and author of the important book “Anatomy of Medical Errors: The Patient in Room 2.”

Donna Helen writes: “The Center for Disease Control (CDC) compiles data on the leading causes of death. Heart disease and cancer are the top two. This list is important because it influences public health priorities, including research and funding allocation.

Unfortunately, medical errors are not on this list even though they would rank at least third. Precise numbers aren’t available, and estimates are controversial, but medical errors probably cause the deaths of between 250,000-440,000 patients a year- astounding and terrifying numbers.

Many more patients, like me, survive their medical errors, to suffer untold complications, sometimes for the rest of their lives.

Why are medical errors nowhere on the CDC’s list?  Because human or system factors are not considered when doctors, coroners, and funeral directors fill out death certificates. They use only categories of disease, morbid condition, and injury for coding.

I know about this because I experienced horrific medical errors and adverse events after entering a hospital for a simple surgery. Instead of going home the next morning, I ended up in a coma in an ICU for weeks — after my surgeons had unknowingly torn my intestine in two places.

I was slowly dying and no one knew it. Residents were busy writing orders for me to eat breakfast and be discharged.  With no one supervising the new doctors or coordinating my care, it took about forty hours before anyone realized how sick I was.

Things got worse in my emergency repair surgery.  A student placed a tube incorrectly, causing me to aspirate barium dye into my lungs. In addition to the infection I had from my leaking bowel, I developed new raging infections, including sepsis.

I endured three more surgeries as doctors tried to save my life. After a month, I finally went home, unable to move, with a huge hole in my abdomen, connected to a wound vac draining machine. I had no idea how to put my life back together.

While most people know someone who has suffered with or died from heart disease or cancer, few people realize the risks patients face from injury or death due to medical errors in hospitals.  Physicians and hospitals seldom disclose the truth. Patients get worse or die without knowing what went wrong.

It is possible to lower or avoid some risk factors for cancer or heart disease.  Alas, there is little a patient can do to prevent medical errors. Patients cannot diagnose themselves, prescribe correct medications, observe their surgery, or coordinate their own care.

It took years for me to learn what went wrong in my specific case. Here are some of what I learned about why things go wrong:

    • Corporate profit is often protected at the expense of patient safety.
Health insurance companies are complicit with hospitals, both of which need patients to produce income.

•Training new doctors is often valued more than patient safety. Patients are seldom told the extent to which they will be practiced on by new doctors or fellows. A famous teaching hospital may be the most dangerous place to be a patient.

•When things go wrong in hospitals, silence is the common response. Doctors and surgeons often deny or cover up errors, or pretend they never occurred.

•Patients and families often wrongly believe a tragic outcome is due to bad luck, or fate.
Here are some of my proposed solutions:

•Healthcare systems and insurance companies need to value patient safety more than profit.

•Hospitals and other healthcare facilities need to operate with transparency so errors can be identified, understood, and eliminated.

•Consumers (and providers) of health care need to learn the truth so they can advocate for safety and prevent medical errors and adverse events.

•Hospitals need to provide leadership and training to encourage and support doctors and other staff to be accountable for their actions.

•The public must become aware of the risks they face in medical settings from preventable errors.

•Consumers of health care need to become their own change agents.

Here is what patients can do:

    • Ask question about every procedure every step of the way and expect clear answers about risks and benefits.

    • Maintain current advance directives — living will and health care power of attorney. Keep originals and provide copies when entering a health system.

    • Ask who will participate in your procedure or surgery.  Will students, residents, fellows, or observers be present?  If so, what will they be doing to your body?

    • The “informed consent” you are required to sign is usually minimal and generic. Much of what you are consenting to is not written on the form or discussed with you. You have the right to add or delete certain items before you sign the consent form, even if a doctor or nurse says otherwise.

    • Keep a list of your medications and know the purpose, risks, side effects, and interactions. On average, there is one medication error per patient per day in hospitals.

    • Have someone act as your advocate and stay with you at all times, or at least during the day and evening.  Staffing shortages are common.  Once, I sat in a chair for more than two hours waiting for someone to help me back to bed.  It was after midnight and my family had gone home.

    • Know the chain of command.  If there is a problem, speak with your nurse, the nursing supervisor, the unit manager, the doctor, doctor on call, or the doctor’s supervisor.  Never assume a new nurse or resident is an authority on your problem.

•If no one can help you, dial zero and ask the hospital operator to connect you with the administrator on call.  If this fails, consider dialing “911.”  I know a nurse who worked at a major medical center.  One night, when she could not get anyone to help her patient, she called “911” and it worked.”

Thanks, Donna Helen. Hospitals are now competing for patients in all the wrong ways — trying to be the fanciest hotel, not the safest and best deliverer of care. Instead of spending fortunes on new lobbies and ritzier rooms, hospitals should be doing much more to perfect quality assurance programs that can prevent errors.

Doctors no longer have time to know their patients and instead are often treating lab tests, not people. We need fewer high tech specialists and many more primary care doctors to organize care and ensure it makes sense and is done well.

Health providers must admit mistakes and learn from them. This actually reduces the risk of malpractice suits and results in fewer future mistakes.

Patients and families can’t be passive. You really have to become fully informed and fight for safe care. Unfortunately, your basic assumption must be that things will go wrong unless you take some responsibility for monitoring them.

People should become much less afraid of disease and much more afraid of treatments.

To learn more about medical mistakes, everyone should see one of the best movies ever made, the hilarious black comedy, ‘The Hospital.’

    War and the Liberal Conscience

    War and the Liberal Conscience

For centuries liberal minded men have been horrified by the pain and waste of war. From Erasmus, who saw war above all as a product of stupidity, to the Marxists who see it as a matter of class conflict, they have produced social theories to account for its occurrence and have tried to devise means to end it.Their prescriptions have been various. The central view of the Enlightenment was that wars would end when the ambitions of princes could be curbed by the sanity of ordinary men. At first the commercial classes seemed to be the new force that would produce this happy state, but by the end of the nineteenth century they themselves (the `capitalists’) were being stigmatized as the instigators of war.Similarly, the nineteenth-century liberals at first believed that the rise of the new independent nation-states of Europe would lead to a permanent peace as the wishes of the masses (naturally peace-loving) were able to express themselves. Again, the supposed agents of peace were soon seen as a prime cause of wars.Despite these contradictions there have been certain continuing themes in the search for a means to end wars, and one of the most enlightening things in this book is they way in which it is possible to see how these themes recur in subtly different forms in differe

    Are You Happy?

    2016-08-18-1471478581-491947-photo4.jpg

    Are you happy?

You know the “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” kind of happy. Happy thoughts. Happy life. Happy you. That may seem like a tall order, right? Why is it that happiness seems to come and go, is saved for special occasions — and often alludes us all together? Maybe it’s because we are looking for love in all the wrong places — and I’m talking self-love to start. If only we could add it to our Amazon shopping carts and with one click, done, a box of happy would arrive at our doorstep. Guess what? I know I’m being a little silly here, but it kind of is that simple.

Even when I first typed the words, Are you happy, I had to take pause. A voice inside my head answered, Yes, for the most part — but then the, I’d be happier if or when’s rolled in. It only reaffirmed that I needed to write this blog — and that I needed to do some truth-telling.

    Start here:
    • Are you happy?
    • What makes you happy?
    • Do you need certain stars to align in order to be happy?
    • What sucks the happy right out of you?

    Continue here:
    • If you’re not happy, why?
    • If you know what makes you happy — do more of that
    • Create the circumstances and situations that support your happy
    • Reevaluate your relationship to the things that suck your happy from you – do less of them

The amazing thing is that as simple as all of the above may seem, the majority of us aren’t keeping those lists in check — and we’ve got an arsenal of excuses to support why we can’t have what we desire. Hello?

Have you ever watched a dog chase its own tail? That’s kind of what it looks like. I really want to be happy, but I’m going to do nothing to support it and see what happens.

I have conversations with people all the time who are in relationships (love and friendship) that pull them down, jobs that deplete them and health situations that don’t support their wellness — believing things can’t change. Look, we all get stuck. But know this: Anything can change when you have a willingness to shift gears from fear to faith.

Happy is not wrapped up in a future destination, it’s in the here and now. You don’t have to rush out to find a guru, head off to a retreat or do anything other than settle back into yourself. This is an inside job. I think one of the main reasons we just can’t quite hold onto ‘happy’ is because of the paths we are choosing to get there.

Think about how often we work to achieve a goal, let’s say in our professional lives — and then upon achieving that goal our head is already onto the next pursuit. We’re always one step ahead, missing the celebratory ride in between.

How often do we give our power away to others? It’s as if we hand them the remote control to our emotions and say, So, how are you going to make me happy today? Ridiculous, but true. I spent much of my life in that self-destructive mode because I didn’t know better and let’s face it, old habits fit like gloves. And somewhere between fear and the addiction to behavior patterns — we lose ourselves.

Happiness can’t be assigned to a person, place or thing: I’ll be happy when…I find my perfect partner, I have enough money in the bank, I attain a certain amount of success in my career, etc. Nope, you’re not going to find it there.

We may yearn for a love partner, a better job, or more money. That’s real — I get it. But I’m finding that the way to be fully content is to figure out how to make peace with where you are in this moment — even amidst life’s messiness. Here’s the thing: Happy is a superpower. It is resilient, intuitive, contagious, and heart-centered. It is your greatest tool.

When you are connected to your own happy place, there is room for you to feel your other emotions as well: sadness, grief, disappointment. We can’t avoid the human experience, but we can choose how we are going to travel through it. And when happy is a permanent resident you will find that your bounce-back from life’s intermittent setbacks is easier and often much shorter.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. But you do need to get clear and honest with yourself. Get rid of the energy vampires in your life, the people who drain you or fill you will negativity and self-doubt. Collect a new tribe that hold you accountable and become your dream-keepers. Release your own limiting beliefs and excuses. Take care of that beautiful physical vessel. Take an action step (even a baby step) on behalf of your dreams.

At the lowest moment in my life when my back had given out, lying in bed, I began to write in a small notebook. They were mere ramblings of inspiration, but they made me happy. Those ramblings helped me envision beyond my current circumstance. I would never have believed then that years down the road, I would ‘come out’ as a writer, that I would create a successful digital magazine and that my dreams would continue to flourish. But that’s the way it goes. It’s not all a saccharine-sweet ride, and we may create some chaos along the way. And yet, it’s possible.

I gave my power away for much of my life. I spent decades sweating the small stuff. But as the sassy me likes to say, The past is the past and it’s looking at your ass. And future-tripping isn’t going to get you anywhere either. You might as well be here now.

Life is a daily realignment for me. But you know what, I am happy. There is lots of love in my house and that love continues to fertilize my dreams — reminds me to stay present, have gratitude, find ways to serve others, to connect to nature and carve out solitude. That’s what I call my happy place. I do know that the more I take care of me — the more happy I have to give and receive.

    Don’t settle for happy enough.

Dad Takes Epic Photos Of Son To Foster His Sense Of Adventure

Ohio photographer Aaron Sheldon has always enjoyed documenting everyday life with his 4-year-old son Harrison. For his latest father-son project, Sheldon added a fun fantasy element.

“Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” is a series of photos of Harrison dressed as an astronaut in ordinary situations in order to illustrate the sense of wonder kids feel as real life explorers discovering everyday adventures.

Sheldon told The Huffington Post he first got the idea for the project while riding the bus with Harrison through downtown Columbus.

“What was a normal, everyday event to me had him completely transfixed,” he said. “Seeing that look of amazement on his face at something so commonplace really struck me. I realized that my son is an explorer, and the world I take for granted, to him, is an amazing place filled with new sights and experiences.”

Sheldon wanted to figure out a way to document his son’s exploration of the world. He later that same week when Harrison went to the doctor’s office with an ear infection.

“Unlike most 3-year-olds, my son loves the doctor’s office ― every part that is, except for the exam table,” the dad explained. “My son had two fears: hand dryers and exam tables, and I was continually trying to find ways to help him face and overcome those two fears.”

As they waited for the doctor, Sheldon asked Harrison to sit on the exam table, and the little boy unsurprisingly said no. The dad then asked his son what sorts of people he thought were brave enough to sit on an exam table. After listing the usual cast of characters traditionally associated with bravery, like firefighters, Harrison had another idea.

“He said ‘What about astronauts, Dad. Are they brave enough?’” Sheldon recalled. “I said ‘Sure they are. After all, they sit on top of rockets and get blasted into space and, before they do that, they have to go to the doctor’s office A LOT!’”

Together, they pretended that Harrison was an astronaut, which helped him face his fears that day. When the exam was over, Sheldon told his son that he was proud of him for being so brave. “He then said to me ‘Next time I get sick, I can wear my astronaut helmet here and you can take a picture of me, right dad?’” the photographer recalled.

That’s when Sheldon’s vision for “Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” fully formed.

Initially the project consisted of the photographer and his son going to local stores, restaurants, libraries and other similar locations. Sheldon would snap a couple of photos of Harrison wearing an astronaut suit, and they’d carry on with their days. As the project progressed, they did some slightly longer photo shoots at exciting locations like the Capitol Building, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Kennedy Space Center.

When Harrison’s mom isn’t working, she likes to join the duo and help her son get suited up, adjust his helmet and provide Pez candy as fuel in between shots.

For Sheldon, the message behind the project is simple. “’Small Steps Are Giant Leaps’ is about reminding parents that everywhere you go, there is a new and exciting world just waiting to be explored,” he told HuffPost. “Our job as parents is to help our children as they explore and make discoveries.”

“I hope that our project will help be a reminder to busy parents to take a moment and help their little explorer make a new discovery or explore a little bit more of their world every single day,” he added.

The dad hopes to turn “Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” into a children’s book. He is currently seeking out publishers and also launched a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds. Sheldon hopes to parlay the project into an opportunity to promote science education in central Ohio as well.

As for Harrison the little astronaut, Sheldon said he loves the photos.

“Anytime I’m sitting at my laptop he’ll climb onto my lap and ask to look at our astronaut pictures,” he said. “When we started getting feedback from other parents after we launched our Kickstarter, I shared that with him too so that he knew the impact that he and I were having on other people.”

“Right now he is very excited without we are putting the book together, and he is helping me select which of the images will be going into it,” he added.

    Living Richly With Less

In the past five months, I have thrown away hundreds of items in my apartment. It hasn’t been easy to let go of some things, but it has always been worthwhile. Part of this process has been practical as my girlfriend is moving in with me in a 230 square foot apartment. Most of the process has been personally fulfilling as it has made me feel more free an unencumbered.

Minimalism is not a new concept. It has been made popular by bloggers like Leo Babauta at Zen Habits and it seems to be a trendy thing to do. Some people may do it out of a sense of uniqueness or superiority, but I have my own reasons. Namely, living with less actually helps me to live more richly.

The Art of Living with Essentials

The concept of essentialism is far more appealing to me than minimalism. Instead of getting rid of everything, I get rid of only the things that are non-essential. I strip to the core, find what is most essential and remove everything else. Here are a few benefits and examples of living a rich life within the framework of essentialism:

    1. Your possessions own you – Recently I had a conversation with a friend who is making around $ 12,000 a month. It’s a high salary for Texas, but he has so many possessions, most of the money ends up gone by the end of the month.

Many Americans exist with possessions like this. The home mortgage is so expensive that families aren’t free to travel. Boats, cars, and a host of other features people rarely use all cost money and restrict freedom. According to some estimates, Americans spend $ 1.2 trillion on things that are non-essential.

    2. We fill up a space no matter the size – According to the LA Times, the average home is filled with 300,000 items. Most people fill up the space that they are given no matter what the size is. If they have a two-car garage, most cannot even fit their cars because of all the other possessions.

This is one of the reasons the tiny house movement has become so strong. My girlfriend and I live in a tiny apartment and may one day purchase a small, efficient home. Even when we visited the coast in Australia we spent time renting a tiny home. It just makes more sense, but it also feels much better. The burden is lifted to be in a smaller space because we can’t fill it with things we don’t need even if we tried.

    3. Mental toughness – In life you will face trials, discomfort, and pain. That is the human condition. How we react to such trials and discomfort is dependent on how much practice we have. The reason people become spoiled is because they have consistently never had to deal with hardship and discomfort.

Living with less is sometimes not as comfortable. You might feel cramped, unable to do the things you’d like, and there is no room for luxuries when basic necessities barely fit. But these are all things that inoculate you from mental strain in the future.

The ancient stoic philosopher, Seneca, used to dress in the cheapest clothing and eat nothing so as to practice poverty. It was a way for him to intentionally build his mental toughness despite having plenty.

    Radical Essentialism

At first it may seem difficult to be an essentialist, but it might be helpful to burn the boats and go all in. By becoming a radical essentialist you don’t just have a change in your physical surroundings. Sure, you’ll reduce your material possessions and free yourself from their burden, but you also have a psychological change. You will start to see the non-essentials in your life, such as people you’d rather not be involved with, poor habits you engage in, and others. You’ll find this to be a movement that changes the way you live and the way that you think.

Comment Sections Are Cesspools Of Rape Culture, Research Finds

One-fourth of all online comments at the end of news articles about sexual assault and rape include victim-blaming statements, new research out of the University of Southern California shows.

The study examined 52 articles and found that only one did not contain comments offering support for the accused perpetrator, the study said. Victim-blaming statements appeared in 1,097 of the 4,239 comments ― or just over 25 percent of them.

“I was surprised that so many people were so mean about these victims,” Kristen Zaleski, associate professor at USC’s School of Social Work, told The Huffington Post. “Even knowing what I know about rape culture, I didn’t expect so much hate and judgment and discriminatory attitudes and othering ― there was a lot of othering.”

Branded as a “first-of-its-kind study,” the researchers examined comments posted to rape-related articles published in the The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times between December 2014 and March 2015. In total, they looked at 52 newspaper articles covering everything from Bill Cosby’s accusers coming forward to the fallout from Rolling Stone’s flawed article on campus rape

If the accused perpetrator was a celebrity or public figure, the individual was more likely to receive support ― or commenters were more likely to attack the alleged victims.

About 16 percent of all comments included statements of support for survivors, while 6 percent offered support to the accused assailants and 23 percent included “trolling” statements about law and society, the study concluded.

Victims received more support and sympathy when the alleged perpetrator was not an American citizen or the assault occurred abroad. But in those cases, the victim-blaming comments were replaced by racist remarks.

    type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related Coverage + articlesList=57ad48c2e4b071840410b8d6,57548e2fe4b0c3752dcdf574,576d323de4b017b379f59fc1

The researchers found that one of the most common victim-blaming responses was when commenters gave instructions to rape survivors ― for example, telling them that they should have gone to the police immediately.

That’s not an uncommon reaction: This week, comedian Kurt Metzger went on an extended social media tirade about rape allegations against a fellow comedian, Aaron Glaser. Many of Metzger’s comments criticized victims of sexual assault for not immediately reporting their attacks to cops.

Comments like this send an implicit message to rape victims that “If this is true, report it,” Zaleski said. “It’s very directive and almost dismissive.”

In articles about celebrities accused of rape, readers would suggest there was a conspiracy afoot. In an article about Bill Cosby, for example, a commenter said that “anyone who doesn’t recognize the political agenda behind these attacks on Cosby hasn’t been paying attention.”

Other commenters suggested that the survivor’s story was too unbelievable to be real or that too much time had passed for it to be real. They also accused victims of playing the “rape card,” or suggested they made up the charges after getting too intoxicated.

“There needs to be a law to protect men and teenage boys from charges made against them for rape or sexual misconduct by women and girls who are stupid enough to get drunk and allow this to happen then turn around and blame the male,” one commenter cited in the study said.

The researchers also discovered a lot of disbelief that men could be assaulted. For example, one comment read: “Ask any guy, it is impossible for any man, especially a teenager, to be ‘raped’ by an NFL cheerleader!”

Some of the comments that blamed the victim also fell under the “trolling” category. These were more likely to bring up ― and then dismiss ― the idea of “rape culture,” denying that sexism, bigotry and inequality create a toxic environment that encourages rape. Conversations about “rape culture” in comment sections often turned into debates about statistics.

“The people who had opinions about who’s to blame, who were basically blaming the survivors or victims, they would use the words ‘rape culture,’” Zaleski said. “They would be somewhat up on the topic and [say] it was bullshit, and one of the ways they would do that is talk about false reporting.”

Often, someone would defend the survivors in the comment sections by posting links to articles about how rare false accusations are, Zaleski explained. The victim-blaming commenters would question the source of the stats, and then there would be a data conversation, she said.

The study, “Exploring rape culture in social media forums,” will be published in the October 2016 issue of Computers in Human Behavior.

Baltimore’s Police Department Is Being Represented By A Neo-Nazi Lawyer Over Wrongful Arrest Of Black Man

A neo-Nazi is representing the Baltimore Police Department in a lawsuit claiming officers fabricated evidence in order to send an black man to jail for a murder he didn’t commit, according to an investigation by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Glen Keith Allen, who works in the Baltimore City Law Department, is a longtime supporter of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, the report says. He is now defending the city in a 2015 lawsuit filed by Sabein Burgess, who was imprisoned for 19 years before being released and having the charges dismissed in 2014.

The SPLC has financial records dating back to 2002 that appear to prove Allen is deeply involved with neo-Nazi groups.

“Allen’s history with organized racism and anti-Semitism is deep. Records obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) show he was a dues-paying member of the National Alliance for years,” the report says. “Allen was also a subscriber to the NA’s racist publications, purchased entrance to a Holocaust denial conference the group held and bought a Holocaust denial DVD the group sold.”

Allen, according to the SPLC, has contributed to the American Eagle Party National Committee and is possibly the vice chairman/parliamentarian or attorney for the NA.

A damning report from the Justice Department released last week shows that Baltimore police officers routinely abused residents’ civil rights, performed unconstitutional searches, failed to hold cops accountable for misconduct and, in some cases, were told by supervisors to target black residents and “lock up all the black hoodies.”

Baltimore has been in the national spotlight since April 2015, when 25-year-old Freddie Gray suffered a fatal spinal cord injury in police custody ― a death widely viewed as one caused by police misconduct.

“Baltimore’s Litigation and Claims Practice Group is arguably one of the most aggressive and successful defenders of police misconduct in the country,” the SPLC’s report says, before pointing to extreme lengths the office will take to avoid paying settlements in these cases.

Baltimore paid out around $ 12 million in police misconduct cases between 2010 and 2014, according to a 2015 Wall Street Journal analysis. Civil rights violations, alleged shootings, beatings and wrongful imprisonment brought on the most expensive payouts.

    Meditation For A Blessed Election

I started writing guided meditations more than ten years ago. As a health and wellness coach I write them for myself to prepare for important trips and events. I write them for friends who are having medical procedures. I help clients write them. And a while back, when this toxic election season was really beginning to affect my peace of mind, I decided to write one specifically about the election. I, like many other Americans of both parties, was having “Trump anxiety.”

At the same time it’s not just politics on my mind. I have been moved and saddened by the many police shootings and terrorist attacks during this difficult year, and kept wondering what I could do to make a difference. How could I use my gifts to help?

I was hesitant to share this publicly because anything related to politics brings down a rain of toxicity and hatred upon the writer and I didn’t want to have that directed at me. After sharing it in my writers’ group and seeing its impact on several listeners, I decided I would share it with my intention for the best possible outcome.

Feel free to take it and make it your own, changing the wording as needed to suit your worldview. I hold on to the hope that most Americans want to feel good about our democratic process and our country. I love the idea of people across the country reading versions of this every day, amplifying its effect in the world. I hold on to the belief that it will make a positive impact on our country in the coming months.

    Meditation for a Blessed Election
Guide me in conversation today with others who disagree with me.

Let me come to those conversations with an open, loving heart.

Guide me as to what actions I should take today to help move our beautiful country forward, and give me clear direction on how to do so.

Help America live up to her inclusive ideals.

Pour out your healing on the racism that still divides our country.

Let hatred be a thing of the past.

Help retrain our police officers where needed, while keeping them safe on the job.

Help heal those communities torn apart by gun violence with real, tangible progress and real solutions.

Help those of us with any kind of privilege use it for healing and justice and the betterment of all.

Bless the candidates near and far. Bless those running for office who are motivated by service and the higher good.

Bless their intentions. Bless their staff members and volunteers.

Bring out their best selves as they campaign.

Surround them with protection to keep them safe.

I say a special prayer for Hillary today. May she be her best and highest self. May she be able to speak clearly today and communicate her best intentions.

May she uphold and live up to all the hopes and dreams of women everywhere. May she be a shining beacon of light around the world.

Protect her from the hatred that is directed at her, surrounding her with a circle of light and powerful protection that is physically represented by the Secret Service. Keep them safe in their jobs and diligent while on duty.

I lift up all the candidates, surrounding them with love, support, and my highest intention for the good of the United States.

Let those who have the country’s highest good in mind, of either party, be blessed with an abundant flow of money, volunteers, and media support.

Let their supporters come forward in the hundreds of millions now and on November 8th. May we have the highest voter turnout in history.

    May love trump hate.

May those people who will work together for the common good of our country and their constituents be elected in landslides.

May those people who have never spoken out before but feel moved, speak out.

May those who have never voted before register and vote on November 8th.

May those who have never done community organizing or volunteering sign up and get started.

May those who haven’t voted recently but want to make the country better and more unified get out to vote.

Remove all obstacles for people to get out and vote.

I look forward to breathing an enormous sigh of relief on November 9th, knowing that the country will be in Hillary’s steady, skilled, experienced hands, and that the legislative branch will be filled with people from both parties dedicated to getting to work together for their constituents, to compromise thoughtfully to move us forward.

Bless us all this day and keep us safe.

What Are Your Options if Medicaid Goes Broke

Americans are living longer than ever.

With that longer life span comes increasing reliance on long-term healthcare services.

And costs associated with in-home care services, nursing homes, and other residential facilities are on the rise.

The primary payer for long-term care is Medicaid, the joint federal and state program designed to help Americans with limited incomes pay medical costs.

“Government programs such as Medicaid and the like may not necessarily be around going forward to provide assistance,” said Money Crashers finance expert David Bakke.

Bakke told Healthline that Medicaid is projected to run out of money in the year 2030, or perhaps as early as 2026.

“Medicaid will certainly have a challenge when it comes to handling the strain of long-term care for seniors and retirees,” he said. “You could make the argument that already the needs of the elderly aren’t being met in a satisfactory fashion under the current system. In fact, 37 percent of long-term care costs are currently being met with out-of-pocket funds.”

According to Bakke, some states are putting the onus on providers to keep care costs under control.

    The realities of long-term care

Melissa Benjamin is a home care worker in Colorado and a leader in the Home Care Fight for $ 15. She’s in the trenches of home care services every day.

In addition to our aging population, she believes other factors are fueling the Medicaid crisis.

In an interview with Healthline, Benjamin said there’s already a shortage of home care workers, and she expects it to get worse. As more experienced workers age out of the workforce or look for employment elsewhere, fewer workers are willing to take up the slack.

“It’s no longer a viable career,” said Benjamin. “Low pay and lack of benefits keep people from choosing this type of work.”

The worker shortage is creating a care gap that forces difficult choices. When family members shoulder more of the care burden, it’s often at the expense of their own employment. Placing a loved one in a facility isn’t always the best option for them or for the family budget.

Although Medicaid covers both types of care, in-home care is often less expensive by several thousand dollars a month.

“It’s one reason I fight for home care. I believe by making home healthcare a viable career, we can keep more people in their homes and save the states money in the long run,” said Benjamin.

For some people, nursing home care is a must. But Benjamin believes many others can be happier and healthier being cared for in their own homes.

“In Colorado, about 10,000 people become seniors every day,” she said. “That’s a strain, and it’s true all around.”

    Then there’s the gender gap.

At 37 years old, Benjamin is already concerned about her own healthcare needs as she ages.

“A higher percentage of home care workers are women. We make less, have fewer benefits, and pay less into Social Security. Often, women who cared for their husbands are left alone and needing care themselves. Plus, we live longer, so that time is more challenging.”

In Benjamin’s experience, long-term care insurance policies can save the day. The key is to sign up when you’re younger and rates are at their best.

Unfortunately, when rates rise, many aren’t able to keep paying the premiums. That can result in having to sell off assets to apply for Medicaid.

“I’ve held the hands of people in facilities as they cry. They want to go home, but their home has been sold to pay for facility care,” she said.

    Planning for long-term care

Seniors, soon-to-be seniors, and caregivers can’t start planning soon enough. It’s a complicated issue and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

As alternatives to insurance and government programs, Bakke recommends a health savings account when applicable, a home equity line of credit, and in some cases, a long-term care annuity.

“In some instances,” said Bakke, “you might be better off foregoing long-term care insurance and paying for whatever costs are left over out of pocket, because of the high cost of paying for insurance coverage in that area.”

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, most seniors can’t afford the out-of-pocket costs of long-term care.

Jennifer FitzPatrick, author of “Cruising through Caregiving: Reducing the Stress of Caring for Your Loved One,” would like to see more public education about long-term care and Medicaid.

“There really needs to be a paradigm shift so older adults and their families are not counting on Medicaid because of misunderstanding,” said FitzPatrick, who has worked as a gerontologist and geriatric social worker for more than 25 years.

“I’d love to see Medicaid encourage more people to consider long-term care insurance, which covers much more than Medicaid can,” FitzPatrick told Healthline. “I wish I saw more being done so caregivers and older adults weren’t in crisis.”

FitzPatrick recommends consulting with a certified elder law attorney.

Benjamin and Fitzpatrick agree that consumers have a lot more options when using private funds than they do when using Medicaid.

“It’s important also for families and older adults to know that often when they do use a Medicaid benefit for a nursing home, for example, they aren’t getting as much choice,” said FitzPatrick. “Sometimes patients and caregivers are dissatisfied with the nursing home options available for a direct Medicaid admission.”

Americans are optimistic. We tend to underestimate the risk of needing long-term care.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that half of seniors over age 65 will have a health problem and need assistance for two years or less.

One in seven will need assistance for more than five years. Those turning 65 now can expect $ 138,000 in future long-term care costs. In many cases, costs will be much higher.

Having a long-term care policy is a good idea, if you can afford it. Most can’t.
As of 2014, fewer than 8 percent of Americans have private long-term care insurance.
Medicaid was never meant to cover long-term care for so many.

“I can’t count the number of caregivers who have incorrectly assumed that Medicare or Medicaid would pay for assisted living or indefinite home care services,” said FitzPatrick.

Women In Jail Are Fastest Growing Segment Of America’s Incarcerated Population

In 1970, there were less than 8,000 women in American jails. By 2014, that number had skyrocketed to nearly 110,000 ― making women in jails the fastest growing segment of America’s incarcerated population.

Yet, surprisingly little research exists on who these women are or why they are increasingly ending up behind bars.

A comprehensive report by the Vera Institute of Justice and the Safety and Justice Challenge, released on Wednesday, is now attempting to fill that knowledge gap.

“Because the research is pretty old and scarce, we had to cobble together a portrait,” said Elizabeth Swavola, the primary author of the report.

Women in jail are mostly black and Hispanic, overwhelmingly poor and low-income, and nearly 80 percent are mothers, she said. Many have high rates of trauma, serious mental and physical illness and histories of substance abuse.

The report was funded by the Safety and Justice Challenge, a national initiative that aims to reduce mass incarceration by changing how America thinks about jails. Unlike prison, where those convicted of crimes are sent to serve sentences, most people in jail are awaiting trial and are legally presumed innocent.

While jails have been rightly recognized as a driver of mass incarceration, Swavola said, women are often left out of the national conversation because they comprise only a small percentage of the incarcerated population as a whole. But women’s pathways to incarceration are different than their male counterparts, she explained, and deserve to be investigated closely.

“Jails are designed for men, because they’re the majority of who is there,” she said. “But that makes it very difficult on women.”

One of the report’s most surprising findings was the high rates of trauma reported by jailed women. According to one study cited in the report, 86 percent of women in jail reported being a victim of sexual violence and 77 percent reported a history of domestic violence. The same pattern has been found among child offenders, with 84 percent of girls in the juvenile justice system reporting that they experienced family violence.

Swavola said women coming to jail with a history of trauma may find standard procedures such as shackling or strip searches deeply distressing, and may trigger painful memories.

Women in jail are especially vulnerable to sexual assault by correctional staff, she said. Between 2009 and 2011, women only made up 13 percent of the jail population, but were 67 percent of victims of sexual abuse by staff members.

Jailed women are also sicker than their male counterparts.

Around 32 percent have a serious mental illness, Swavola said, including major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. That’s double the rate of jailed men. Over half of jailed women report having a current medical problem, compared to 35 percent of men. In one study, 82 percent of jailed women reported they’d experienced drug or alcohol abuse or dependence in their lifetime.

“They are coming with a whole host of disadvantages, and many of those disadvantages lead to their criminal justice involvement, and then are deepened by the criminal justice system itself,” she said.

Like men, most women in jail are charged with low-level nonviolent crimes, such as property crimes, drug offenses and public order offenses. But they typically have less money than jailed men, Swavola said, and being incarcerated can jeopardize their financial security.

“They come to the system so financially marginalized, and then at each step of the process, there are fines and fees,” she said, noting that nearly half of all single black and Hispanic women have zero or negative net worth. “It perpetuates a cycle of disadvantage. You really have to question what the utility is at some point.”

Laurie Garduque, the director of Justice Reform for the MacArthur Foundation, said it’s important to think about jails as a local problem that requires local solutions.

“This is a community issue,” she said. “In order for law enforcement, courts and corrections to divert women from jail, they are going to need supports and services in the community.”

    Letting Go Of Toxic People

Clearing our bodies of toxins isn’t always about what we eat or drink. Sometimes removing the poison means you have to make the difficult decision to cut toxic people out of your life to heal your soul.

    It’s not an easy task.

Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the damage being caused from the negative energy of a friend or family member.

We don’t notice when someone is trying to control us. The signs are missed. You don’t understand why you are agitated, annoyed, and anxiety ridden in someone’s presence until you take a step back and get in touch with your inner self.

You don’t recognize that you often keep silent and resist the urge to defend yourself, to speak out when you are hearing lies. You give excuses as to why someone behaves the way they do because they have been there for you often over the years and you afraid to lose that perceived support.

I live by my emotions, and don’t always understand why I feel the way I do around certain people. It isn’t until I have “fact” that I can step away.

Maybe it’s the reporter in me — there is always two sides to a story. I try very hard to see every angle. Even if my instincts are telling me to walk away, I have a hard time cutting the anchor because I don’t want to ever be seen as “mean” or “bad.”

My insecurities often get the better of and have been used against me. But slowly I’m starting to emerge from my shell.

Maybe it’s getting older. You start to realize that not everyone has your best interest at heart. Some people like when you are in crisis because it fulfills their want to be needed. They feed off the drama.

They fill your head with half-truths and half-lies, making you believe things about yourself that you know aren’t true. They put a slant on every story in order in order to make themselves able to fit the role they’ve created.

For their story to work you have to be the antagonist or partner in crime because otherwise they will have to come face to face with themselves in the mirror.

It’s not easy to let go of the friendships, relationships and family loyalties that cause you pain.

But in the words of my friend Deb,

“If you need to cut ties, do it, and find those kind-like souls that can feed your spirit.”

The braver you are and recognize and remove those hurting you, the more room you have to be your true self and let the right people in who lift you up, not weigh you down.
