on the subject of the feminist business: re-reading Flannery O’Connor

On the subject of the feminist business: Re-Reading Flannery O’Connor is a groundbreaking collection of critical essays that responds to mainstream feminist theory in approaching O’Connor’s fiction. These innovative readings provide a fresh reappraisal of O’Connor’s work, revealing how she defies the patriarchal Southern culture in which she lived with brilliantly subversive depictions of the women who inhabited her world.

Good News! Kim Kardashian Made Up Her Mind And She’s Voting For Hillary Clinton

Kim Kardashian has made up her mind about who she’s voting for in the upcoming presidential election. On Saturday, the 35-year-old took the time to explain the context in which she told Wonderland magazine that she was “on the fence,” about who to vote for ― implying that she was considering voting for Donald Trump.

In a post on her website and app, Kardashian made it clear that she intend to vote for Hillary Clinton.

“There was a point when I wasn’t 100% sure I was even going to vote in this election; I didn’t want to vote blindly,” Kardashian wrote. “But I also thought about how not voting would mean that I wasn’t making my voice heard, so I decided to talk to my closest friends and family who I love and trust, to have an open conversation about politics.”

Kardashian explained that she had a “long conversation” with her stepparent Caitlyn Jenner, who encouraged her to research the candidates and their policies before making a decision.

“And so that’s what I did. I thought about the things that are so important to me that they outweigh everything else, such as gun control and protecting women’s rights to safe and legal abortion,” the reality star wrote, ultimately coming to the conclusion that she “without a doubt” stands with Clinton.

“I’m with her. I believe Hillary will best represent our country and is the most qualified for the job. This year, I’m not just voting for myself, but also for my children, and I took that into careful consideration when I made my decision.”

Kardashian did, however, appear to leave herself a little wiggle room in case Trump wins:

Now that I have made my choice I want to be clear… I would never judge anyone based on their political or religious beliefs. I believe that both candidates have the intention of making the country a safer and stronger place for every American, they just have different ideas about how we get there.

Well, that’s all cleared up.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

What Women Want: An Agenda for the Women's Movement

What Women Want: An Agenda for the Women's Movement

American women fare worse than men on virtually every major dimension of social status, financial well-being, and physical safety. Sexual violence remains common, and reproductive rights are by no means secure. Women assume disproportionate burdens in the home and pay a heavy price in the workplace. Yet these issues are not political priorities. Nor is there a consensus that there still is a serious problem. In What Women Want, Deborah L. Rhode, one of the nation''s leading scholars on women and law, brings to the discussion a broad array of interdisciplinary research as well as interviews with heads of leading women''s organizations. Is the women''s movement stalled? What are the major obstacles it confronts? What are its key priorities and what strategies might advance them? In addressing those questions, the audiobook explores virtually all of the major policy issues confronting women. Topics include employment and appearance discrimination, the gender gap in pay and leadership opportunities, work/family policies, childcare, divorce, same-sex marriage, sexual harassment, domestic violence, rape, trafficking, abortion, poverty, and political representation, all with a particular focus on the capacities and limits of law as a strategy for social change. Why, despite four decades of equal employment legislation, is women''s workplace status so far from equal? Why, despite a quarter century''s effort at reforming rape law, is America''s rate of reported rape the second highest in the developed world? Part of the problem lies in the absence of political mobilization around such issues and the underrepresentation of women in public office. In an age where many women are reluctant to identify as feminists, a broad-ranging, expert look at where American women are today is more necessary than ever. This path-breaking book explores how women can and should act on what they want.

Wife to Charlotte Police: ‘Don’t Shoot Him. He Has No Weapon.’

Two more black men have been shot and killed by police: in Charlotte, North Carolina (Keith Lamont Scott) and in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Terence Crutcher).

WARNING: THESE VIDEOS ARE GRAPHIC AND THE AUDIO UNSETTLING AND EXPLICIT.

This is a tale of two cities.

In one city, there is police accountability and no rioting. In the other city, there is no police accountability. For days, there are riots and protests by the public.

Here is the wife’s cell phone video of the Charlotte shooting. The audio is heartbreaking, as she alternately pleads with the police and with her husband:

Here is the Police video of the Charlotte shooting:

There is nothing wrong with your phone or computer. The video was not released. Charlotte’s police chief said Thursday the agency will not publicly release video footage of Keith Lamont Scott’s death.

Here is a video of the rioting in Charlotte.

That is the tale of one city, Charlotte.

Here is the tale of the other city.

Here is the Police Video of the Tulsa, Oklahoma shooting of Terrence Crutcher (19:43:52)

Here is news of the indictment of the officer involved in the Tulsa shooting for manslaughter.

Here is a video of the rioting in Tulsa:

There is no video because there was no rioting.

Two cities, two shootings. Different governmental reactions, different responses by the people. See the connection?

When there is a responsive police force and the citizens feel their concerns are being heard, they are largely willing to let the system work.

Here are two questions that hopefully will be answered in short order:

In Tulsa, how did the PCP get to the scene, where it was discovered by the police? Did the victim have it? That’s what the police imply.

In Charlotte, how did the weapon get to the scene where it was discovered by the police? Did the victim have it? That’s what the police imply.

Its pretty important for the official narrative to show the public that the victims somehow “deserved to be shot.” That’s why there was so much discussion about the convenience store crime in Ferguson which led to the shooting of Michael Brown.  His death was somehow justified in the eyes of some if he was a bully in a stop and shop, the theory goes.

We don’t know the answer to the two questions, but…

There are two terms of police lingo that everyone should learn. “Throwaways” and “Flaking”

“Throwaways”: are untraceable small caliber weapons (guns) allegedly carried by some police officers, often in a leg holster, that can be clandestinely dropped where the police need to find a weapon.

“Flaking”: this is the secretive dropping of untraceable drugs, allegedly by police officers, where the police need to find drugs.

Nobody really knows whether the gun and PCP were genuinely at the scene of each respective shooting, but hopefully a complete investigation will uncover the truth.

This writer has the utmost respect and appreciation for law enforcement officers and the work they do. It is selfless, thankless and dangerous work, and the criminals they face do not subscribe to such niceties as following the law.

But we’ve reached a tipping point in America, where people across the political spectrum have seen years of these shootings and are fed up.

Here are some similar encounters of the recent past.

ALTON STERLING (Baton Rouge Man Selling CDs)

PHILANDO CASTILE (Minnesota Man Pulled Over for Busted Tail light, shot while moving arm)

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Millennials: We Owe It To Our Country To Prevent A Trump Presidency

In order to be heard, you need people in power who are willing to listen.

Without that, nothing else matters. I don’t care how obvious you think your cause is – voting rights, climate change, money in politics, inequality, economic growth – you name it. Protests, social media rants, blog posts, petitions – all of it is useless without allies in state legislatures, governorships, Congress, the courts, federal agencies, and the presidency.

No one is happy with the two major parties, including me, but “the two party system” exists because the Constitution created a plurality voting system, in which the candidate with the most votes wins. The two party system is written into the DNA of this country. I’m all in favor of ranked-choice voting, which would help change that, but voting third-party in this election won’t accomplish that goal. For reference, Maine is holding a referendum on whether to institute this method for down-ballot races, likely because they keep electing the bigoted and emotionally unstable Paul LePage in three-way races.

In the meantime, you have two flawed, realistic options, and millennials, when you look at the issues, the difference between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is the difference between a rash and organ failure. If what you hope for is to be heard when you demand a more inclusive society, more widely shared prosperity, and dignity for all Americans no matter their religion, skin color, gender, or sexual orientation, opposing Donald Trump is not enough. You have to vote for Clinton.

Even if you think Hillary Clinton believes in none of those things, the fact that she claims to matters. Voters overestimate the importance of a politician’s perceived “genuine” beliefs, which privilege the loudest, charismatic people over the quiet but productive ones. What should matter is their ability to listen to voters and deliver solutions that genuinely improve their lives.

For all her flaws, Hillary Clinton played a crucial role in improving people’s lives no matter where she’s served:

Where Donald Trump seeks to divide and enrage, Hillary Clinton seeks to build and befriend. Yes, she is awkward, unexciting, intensely private, too friendly with Wall Street, and too comfortable using the military. But she is capable of learning and listening to others – of balancing competing concerns, making informed judgments, and changing her mind when presented with new facts. Those capacities are essential for any president and Trump lacks all of them.

Further, Clinton knows this is not the 1990s, and that her party has turned against financial deregulation, mass incarceration, and cutting the social safety net. She’s running on the most progressive platform in the Democratic Party’s history and knows that we expect her to enact as much of it as she can.

The temptation to vote for Gary Johnson or Jill Stein is an understandable one, especially for millennials, who greatly value freedom of choice. But American presidential elections are not marketplaces, but hugely consequential decisions that mean acceptance or oppression – even life or death for many Americans. Voting to punish “the two party system” or because you think a third-party candidate best fits your views will condemn many of your fellow citizens to Trump’s wrath and the world to an uncertain and unstable future.

We’re obligated to protect and defend one another – in our homes, our schools, our workplaces, and yes, in our elections. Voting for anyone other than Hillary Clinton is forsaking that duty.

6 Expert-Approved Tips For Dating With Anxiety

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, getting through a date can seem near impossible.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”

Your Pregnancy Week by Week: Updated 6th Edition

Your Pregnancy Week by Week: Updated 6th Edition

Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it’s associated more often with paranoia. Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectant women: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers pretty much any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that other best-selling pregnancy guide. In this completely revised and updated edition, Curtis describes the physical developments from weeks 1 through 40–or 41 or 42!–such as the size and weight of the baby, emotional changes in the mother, typical medical tests offered, and nutritional requirements. (The iron found in prenatal vitamins may exacerbate morning sickness, he writes, because iron supplementation is usually not needed until the final trimester.) It is too bad that Dr. Curtis does not recommend more alternative-medicine approaches for treating common pregnancy discomforts. In the chapter covering Week 8, he rightly describes sciatic-nerve pain as excruciating, but does not advise yoga or chiropractic treatments for its relief. However, he *is* hip to the use of doulas, or labor coaches, he encourages breastfeeding, and includes numerous tips for making your partner feel included in what should be a thrilling experience for you both. –Erica Jorgensen

Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts Would Cause Deficit To Explode, Report Says

Donald Trump’s policies would make the federal deficit much bigger. Hillary Clinton’s wouldn’t.

That’s the most important takeaway of a new report, one that maybe should get a little attention this campaign season.

The report comes from Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan think tank that, as the name suggests, focuses heavily on whether the government has enough resources to meet its financial obligations.

Earlier this year, the committee published a thorough review of the Clinton and Trump agendas ― with a particular focus on how each would affect the deficit (the difference between what the government spends and takes in) and the debt (the total amount of money that the government owes).

On Thursday, the committee published a new version, taking into account proposals that Clinton and Trump had introduced since the last analysis. The verdict was pretty similar to the last one.

Once again, the committee found, Trump’s proposed tax cut would pour red ink all over the federal ledger, while Clinton painstakingly identified enough new taxes to offset nearly the entire cost of the programs she would launch.

To be clear, government borrowing isn’t always a bad thing. Economists argue among themselves over how much debt the federal government can carry, and for what purposes it might be worthwhile.

Today might actually be an ideal time for government to incur higher deficits, at least for the short term, because low interest rates make borrowing unusually cheap ― and a burst of spending for infrastructure could pay off in the long run.

But, for the most part, that’s not the kind of borrowing Trump has in mind.

The big item on the Republican nominee’s agenda is that tax cut. It’s gone through no less than three incarnations now, and the latest version is actually smaller than the previous one. But the basic shape is the same, with corporations and the wealthy benefitting disproportionately.

And according to the committee’s projection, it would permanently change the budgetary baseline, substantially increasing the shortfall between what the government takes in and what it sends out ― to the tune of $ 4.5 trillion over the next 10 years.

Throw in the rest of Trump’s agenda, including a boost in defense spending and an even bigger cut to Medicaid, and ― according to the report ― you get a total impact of $ 5.3 trillion in new debt over the next 10 years.

The story with Clinton’s agenda is quite different. In fact, it may surprise cynics who assume all politicians are equally unserious when they say they would pay for new initiatives.

The Democratic presidential nominee has called for an array of new spending programs, some of them quite expensive. These include efforts to help people pay out-of-pocket medical bills and generous new aid for families paying college tuition.

But Clinton has also said she will offset the cost of those programs with new taxes on corporations and the wealthiest Americans ― a promise, the committee found, she has largely kept with her proposals. All told, the committee found, Clinton’s policies would add $ 200 billion to the federal debt over 10 years. In the context of campaign promises, which are never that precise, that’s a pittance ― and maybe even a rounding error.

The estimate may be slightly generous to Clinton, as it assumes her promise of capping child care costs at 10 percent of family income would cost just $ 150 billion over 10 years. Projections for similar proposals from independent think tanks suggest such a program, fully implemented, would cost much more.

But even allowing for that, the impact of Clinton’s agenda on the deficit would be far less than Trump’s ― and would ultimately depend on whether Clinton could identify other sources of revenue to pay for it.

For a better sense of how the Trump and Clinton agendas compare, you can think about debt in the way most economists do ― by looking at it as a percentage of gross domestic product, or GDP. If Clinton’s policies became law, the committee found, federal debt after 10 years would be 86 percent of GDP ― pretty much what the experts project as of now. If Trump’s policies became law, by contrast, federal debt after 10 years would land at around 105 percent.

A very real danger of pushing debt levels higher indefinitely is that it could slow the economy ― or, at the very least, create a financial shortfall that would eventually force deep cuts to Medicare and Social Security, programs Trump has insisted he would defend.

As the committee points out, neither Clinton nor Trump would reduce the government’s debt burden over time, which is something many and probably most mainstream economists would say is necessary ― although how quickly to do that, and with what kinds of policies, is an ongoing subject of debate.

But Clinton wouldn’t make a tough situation tougher. Trump would.

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. (Check out their downloadable signs, and see “before” and “after” images of their stairwells.)

Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

23 New ‘Geniuses’ Pushing The Boundaries Of Art And Science Today

From a 44-year-old microbiologist to a 32-year-old long-form journalist to a 67-year-old jewelry maker, the 2016 class of MacArthur Fellows is a diverse selection of the sharpest minds in America today.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced the recipients of its annual MacArthur Fellowship ― commonly referred to as the “Genius Grant” ― early Thursday morning. Dianne Newman, Sarah Stillman and Joyce J. Scott are just three of those recipients, earning themselves a $ 625,000 stipend and a spot in the history books next to previous fellows like writer Susan Sontag, astrophysicist Joseph Taylor, and artist Carrie Mae Weems.

The MacArthur Fellowship dates back to 1981, created to acknowledge and celebrate high-achieving individuals in disciplines as diverse as sculpture, chemistry, human rights law and engineering. What was once a $ 50,000 award has since grown into a six-figure prize, awarded to American citizens and residents with a “no strings attacked” policy to enable them to pursue new creative work.

This year, the fellows include 12 women and 11 men, ranging in age from the 31 to 67. See the entire list of new “geniuses” below:

What Women Want

What Women Want

American women fare worse than men on virtually every major dimension of social status, financial wellbeing, and physical safety. Sexual violence remains common, and reproductive rights are by no means secure. Women assume disproportionate burdens in the home and pay a heavy price in the
workplace. Yet these issues are not political priorities, and worse, there is a lack of consensus that there still is a serious problem, or at least one that women have any reason or capacity to address. This no problem problem helps explain why women fail to mobilize around issues that materially
affect the quality of their lives. Why is this, why does it matter, and how can we best respond?

What Women Want focuses on the policy agenda for women. Deborah L. Rhode, one of the nation''s leading scholars on women and law, brings to the discussion a broad array of interdisciplinary research as well as interviews with heads of leading women''s organizations. Key questions addressed include
whether the women''s movement is stalled. What are the major obstacles it confronts? What are its key priorities and what strategies might advance them? In addressing those questions, the book explores virtually all of the major policy issues confronting women. Topics include employment and
appearance discrimination, the gender gap in pay and leadership opportunities, work/family policies, childcare, divorce, same- sex marriage, sexual harassment, domestic violence, rape, trafficking, abortion, poverty, and politics. Discussion focuses on the capacities and limits of law as a strategy
for social change. Why, despite four decades of enforcement of equal employment legislation, is women''s workplace status so far from equal? Why, despite a quarter century''s effort at reforming rape law, is America''s rate of reported rape the second highest in the developed world? Part of the problem
lies in the absence of political mobilization around such issues and the underrepresentation of women in public office. This path-breaking book explores how women can and should act on what they want.

375 Top Scientists Warn Us Not To Vote For Trump

Hundreds of the world’s leading scientists, including famed physicist Stephen Hawking, warn in an open letter Tuesday that a Donald Trump win in November would prove disastrous to global efforts against climate change.

The Republican presidential nominee, who once claimed global warming is a hoax “created by and for the Chinese,” vowed in May that he would “cancel” the historic Paris climate agreement.

Opting out of that pact, write the 375 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel Prize winners, would have “severe and long-lasting” consequences, both for the planet and for the United States’ credibility.

“A ‘Parexit,’” the letter states, “would send a clear signal to the rest of the world: ‘The United States does not care about the global problem of human-caused climate change. You are on your own.”

The U.S. and China ― the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases ― officially ratified the Paris agreement earlier this month, a major step toward having the deal take effect this year. More than 170 nations signed the Paris agreement in April, committing to fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions.

“The United States can and must be a major player in developing innovative solutions to the problem of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases,” the letter says. “Nations that find innovative ways of decarbonizing energy systems and sequestering CO2 will be the economic leaders of the 21st century. Walking away from Paris makes it less likely that the U.S. will have a global leadership role, politically, economically, or morally. We cannot afford to cross that tipping point.”

Also among the signees is former Harvard biology professor E.O. Wilson, commonly known as the “father of biodiversity,” who earlier this month told The Huffington Post that his “main worry right now is that the Republican candidate might win the election.”

Trump has made his feelings about climate change and environmental protection alarmingly clear. He’s said weather “goes up and it goes down,” and warned that unlike him, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton wants to “shut down the mines.” Trump’s senior economic adviser, Stephen Moore, said that lifting all restrictions on mining, fracking and drilling is among the ways the GOP candidate plans to pay for his costly proposals.

Although Tuesday’s letter doesn’t mention Trump by name, it is a clear attempt to steer Americans away from casting votes in his favor come November.

“Human-caused climate change is not a belief, a hoax, or a conspiracy. It is a physical reality,” the scientists write. “During the Presidential primary campaign, claims were made that the Earth is not warming, or that warming is due to purely natural causes outside of human control. Such claims are inconsistent with reality.”

Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson didn’t sign the letter, but endorsed it in a statement Tuesday to Mashable.

“For lawmakers to not heed the advice of esteemed scientists on matters of science, in this the 21st century, signals the beginning of the end of an informed democracy,” Tyson told the publication.

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

Your Health, Your Decisions: How To Work With Your Doctor To Become A Knowledge-powered Patient

Your Health, Your Decisions: How To Work With Your Doctor To Become A Knowledge-powered Patient

Many authors have explored how doctors make decisions, and in nearly every example, the physician is at the center of discussion, with the patient as beneficiary of her or his decisions. Dr. Robert McNutt starts from a very different premise: challenging the physician-directed medical expertise model of making medical decisions, he presents practical information and formal exercises designed to give patients the tools and confidence to compare and consider their health care options.McNutt addresses a number of scenarios-including heart disease, breast cancer, and prostate surgery-in which patients typically confront a range of choices about diagnoses and procedures. By providing a clear explanation of the statistics behind clinical trials, he teaches patients to weigh the costs and benefits of their treatment options and empowers them to ask critical questions as they take a stronger hand in their own care.Your Health, Your Decisions moves from specific scenarios that commonly baffle patients to a systematic exploration of how to understand options and the tools available for assessing the risks and benefits of different treatments. By offering patients the tools they need to be full partners in their own health care, McNutt demystifies what can be a bewildering and terrifying process.

St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson Shuts Down Fox News Hosts On Live TV

The police chief of St. Cloud, Minnesota, refused to play along when Fox News hosts tried to get him to extend the blame for Saturday’s knife attack to the local Somali immigrant community.

Chief William Blair Anderson was on “Fox & Friends” on Monday to talk about the attack, which left eight people injured, when cohost Steve Doocy tried to tie the incident to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call for “extreme vetting” of immigrants.

“Do you share his concern about who is coming into the country?” Doocy asked.

In remarks posted online by Media Matters, the chief replied:

“My job is public safety. It’s not immigration policy. I can tell you that the vast majority of all of our citizens, no matter their ethnicity, are fine, hard-working people, and now is not the time for us to be divisive. We already have a very cohesive community, and I expect that this will draw us even closer together. But at the end of the day, our job is public safety, period.”

Cohost Ainsley Earhardt tried to press the issue, claiming “Minnesota leads the nation” in people leaving the country to join terrorists and asking if Anderson receives cooperation from local imams.

“How do you fight this?” Earhardt asked. “Because it’s a mentality that they’re learning, many of them, behind closed doors.”

Anderson responded:

We actually work very well not just with our East African community, but all of our community. We meet regularly with any number of people, whether they are advocates for a specific ethnicity or different cause. It’s one of things that makes St. Cloud a wonderful place to live, and I know that might sound corny, but it’s the truth. We have established and maintained a very good rapport with our East African community and our community at large.

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

#1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

#2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

#3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Apologizing To My Daughter For The Last 15 Years Of War

Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com

I recently sent my last kid off for her senior year of college. There are rituals to such moments, and because dad-confessions are not among them, I just carried boxes and kept quiet. But what I really wanted to say to her — rather than see you later, call this weekend, do you need money? — was: I’m sorry.

Like all parents in these situations, I was thinking about her future. And like all of America, in that future she won’t be able to escape what is now encompassed by the word “terrorism.”

Everything Is Okay, But You Should Be Terrified

Terrorism is a nearly nonexistent danger for Americans. You have a greater chance of being hit by lightning, but fear doesn’t work that way. There’s no 24/7 coverage of global lightning strikes or “if you see something, say something” signs that encourage you to report thunderstorms. So I felt no need to apologize for lightning.

But terrorism? I really wanted to tell my daughter just how sorry I was that she would have to live in what 9/11 transformed into the most frightened country on Earth.

Want the numbers? Some 40% of Americans believe the country is more vulnerable to terrorism than it was just after September 11, 2001 — the highest percentage ever.

Want the apocalyptic jab in the gut? Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley said earlier this month that the threat remains just as grave: “Those people, those enemies, those members of that terrorist group, still intend — as they did on 9/11 — to destroy your freedoms, to kill you, kill your families, they still intend to destroy the United States of America.”

All that fear turned us into an engine of chaos abroad, while consuming our freedoms at home. And it saddens me that there was a different world, pre-9/11, which my daughter’s generation and all those who follow her will never know.

Growing Up

My kids grew up overseas while, from 1988 to 2012, I served with the State Department. For the first part of my career as a diplomat, wars were still discreet matters. For example, though Austria was a neighbor of Slovenia, few there were worried that the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s would spill across the border. Suicide bombers didn’t threaten Vienna when we visited as tourists in 1991. That a war could again consume large parts of the globe and involve multiple nations would have seemed as remote to us vacationers that year as the moon.

Even the big war of the era, Desert Storm in 1991, seemed remarkably far away. My family and I were assigned to Taiwan at the time and life there simply went on. There was no connection between us and what was happening in Kuwait and Iraq, and certainly we didn’t worry about a terror attack.

It’s easy to forget how long ago that was. Much of the Balkans is now a tourist destination, and a young soldier who fought in Desert Storm would be in his mid-forties today. Or think of it this way: either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump on entering the Oval Office next January will be the fifth president in succession to bomb Iraq.

When September 11, 2001, arrived, I was on assignment to Japan, and like everyone, as part of a collective trauma, I watched the terrible events on TV. Due to the time difference, it was late at night in Tokyo. As the second plane hit the World Trade Center, I made sandwiches, suspecting the phone would soon ring and I’d be called to the embassy for a long shift. I remember my wife saying, “Why would they call you in? We’re in Tokyo!” Then, of course, the phone did ring, and I ran to grab it — not out of national security urgency, but so it didn’t wake my kids.

My daughter’s birthday falls on the very day that George W. Bush launched the invasion of Iraq. I missed her celebration in 2003 to stay at work preparing for the embassy to be overrun by al-Qaeda. I missed her birthday again in 2005, having been sent on temporary duty to Thailand to assist the U.S. Navy in setting up a short-term base there. When the naval officers mentioned the location they wanted to use to the Thai military liaison accompanying us, he laughed. That’s taken, he said, but you didn’t hear it from me, better ask your own people about it.

Later, I would learn that the location was a CIA black site where the country I then represented was torturing human beings.

Looking back, it’s remarkable to realize that, in response to a single day of terror, Washington set the Middle East ablaze, turned air travel into a form of bondage play, and did away with the best of our democracy.

Nothing required the Patriot Act, Guantánamo, renditions, drone assassinations, and the National Security Agency turning its spy tools inward. The White House kept many of the nastiest details from us, but made no secret of its broader intentions. Americans on the whole supported each step, and later Washington protected the men and women who carried out each of the grim acts it had inspired. After all, they were just following orders.

Protocols now exist allowing the president to select American citizens without a whit of due process for drone killing. Only overseas, he says, but you can almost see the fingers crossed behind his back. Wouldn’t an awful lot of well-meaning Americans have supported a drone strike in San Bernardino or at the Pulse club in Orlando? Didn’t many support using a robot to blow up a suspect in Dallas?

Back in the Homeland

The varieties of post-9/11 fear sneak up on us all. I spent a week this summer obsessively watching the news for any sign of trouble in Egypt while my daughter was there visiting some old embassy acquaintances. I worried that she was risking her life to see a high school friend in a country once overrun with tourists.

So I want to say sorry to my daughter and her friends for all the countries where we Americans, with our awkward shorts and sandals, were once at least tolerated, but that are now dangerous for us to visit. Sorry that you’ll never see the ruins of Babylon or the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq unless you join the military.

Arriving back in the U.S., my daughter called from the airport to say she’d be home in about an hour. I didn’t mention my worries that she’d be stopped at “the border,” a new name for baggage claim, or have her cell phone confiscated for daring to travel to the Middle East. An immigration agent did, in fact, ask her what her purpose was in going there, something even the Egyptians hadn’t bothered to question her about.

I also wanted to apologize to my daughter because, in our new surveillance world, she will never really know what privacy is. I needed to ask her forgiveness for how easily we let that happen, for all those who walk around muttering that they have nothing to hide, so what’s to worry about. I wanted to tell her how sorry I was that she’s now afraid of the police, not just for herself but especially for her friends of color. I wanted to tell her how badly I felt that she’d only know a version of law enforcement so militarized that, taking its cues from the national security state, it views us all as potential enemies and believes that a significant part of its job involves repressing our most basic rights.

I’m sorry, I want to say to her, that protesters can be confined in something called a “free speech zone” surrounded by those same police. I want to tell my daughter that the Founders would rise up in righteous anger at the idea of the police forcing citizens into such zones outside a political convention — and at the fact that most journalists don’t consider such a development to be a major story of our times.

As I sent her off to college, I wanted to say how sorry I was that we had messed up her world, sorry we not only didn’t defeat the terrorists the way Grandpa did the Nazis but, by our actions, gave their cause new life and endless new recruits. Al-Qaeda set a trap on 9/11 and we leaped into it. The prison American occupiers set up at Camp Bucca in Iraq became a factory for making jihadis, and the torture chambers at Abu Ghraib remain, like Guantánamo, an infomercial inviting others to pick up a weapon.

The New Normal

My daughter is not naïve. Like many of her classmates, she’s aware of most of these things, but she has no point of comparison. What fish truly sees the water around it? And imagine how much harder it’ll be for her future kids. Her adult life has been marked by constant war, so much so that “defeating the terrorists” is little more than a set phrase she rolls her eyes at. It’s a generational thing that’s too damn normal, like Depression-era kids still saving aluminum foil and paper bags in the basement after decades of prosperity.

I’m truly sorry that her generation copes with this by bouncing between cynicism and the suspension of disbelief. It was, in a way, that suspension of disbelief that allowed so many, including older people who should have known better, to accept the idea that invading Iraq was a reasonable response to an attack on America by a group of Saudis funded by Saudi “charity” donations. By now, “well, it wasn’t actually a crime” is little short of a campaign slogan for acts that couldn’t be more criminal. That’s a world on a path to accepting 2+2 can indeed equal 5 — if our leaders tell us it’s so.

We allow those leaders to claim that the thousands of American troops now stationed in Iraq are somehow not “boots on the ground,” or “ground troops.” Drone strikes, we’re told, are surgical, killing only bad guys with magic missiles, and never purposely hitting civilians, hospitals, children, or wedding parties. The deaths of human beings in such situations are always rare and accidental, the equivalent of those scratches on your car door from that errant shopping cart in the mall parking lot.

Cleaning Up After Dad

If anyone is going to fix this mess, I want to tell my daughter, it’s going to have to be you. And I want to add, you’ve got to do a better job than I did — if, that is, you really want to find a way to say thanks for the skating lessons, the puppy, and that night I didn’t get angry when you violated curfew to spend more time with that boy.

After the last cardboard boxes had been lugged up the stairs, I held back my tears until the very end. Hugging my daughter at that moment, I felt as if I wasn’t where I was standing but in a hundred other places. I wasn’t consoling a smart, proud, twenty-something woman, apprehensive about senior year, but an elementary school student going to bed on the night that would forever be known only as 9/11.

Back home, the house is empty and quiet. Outside, the leaves have just a hint of yellow. At lunch, I had some late-season strawberries nearly sweet enough to confirm the existence of a higher power. I’m gonna really miss this summer.

I know I’m not the first parent to grow reflective watching his last child walk out the door, but I have a sense of what’s ahead of her: an American world filled with misplaced fears.  Fear is a terrible thing to be sorry for, and that in itself can be scary.

Stephen Burlingham Going Beyond Art for Youth with Cancer

Cancer. The word that terrifies us, at any age. But when a young person is struck by it, it seems all the more tragic. To help cope with this harsh reality, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who joined together to form WHO Cares and created The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). This is a place that allows teenagers to feel like teenagers and immerse in an atmosphere far unlike a hospital’s (program).

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Teen and Young Adult (TYA@MSK) Program offers special services to MSK’s teen and young adult population.

The Lounge is a space designed especially for this unique age group that was made possible by a $ 1 million donation from Teen Cancer America. The nonprofit organization, co-founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, partners with hospitals throughout the U.S. to develop specialized facilities for teens and young adults with cancer.

Inspired to go beyond art to create a space for healing, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center turned to a new friend of mine, the extraordinary thinker and doer Stephen Burlingham. Stephen, speaking to our foundation’s young global leaders this summer, explained his recent piece “Whisper” featured in the MSK Lounge for Teens and Young Adults:

I wanted to go beyond art. “Whisper,” for me, is hope for the patients, the family and friends of children living with cancer. My work springs directly from envisioning humanity’s cumulative knowledge and belief encapsulated within an ever-expanding membrane that emanates from the Elements themselves.

My work stands for the universal Membrane and involves my search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restrains and to see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible – that which is unable to be touched or grasped, that lacks a physical presence.

Stephen is no stranger when it comes with working with children in needs. The grand-grandson of the renowned designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stephen was commissioned for designing the award for the Save the Children’s 75th Anniversary Benefit in 2007. Three visionary leaders were honored at that benefit with Save the Children’s Global Humanitarian Awards — former President George H. W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and Melinda Gates.

Unlike any other artist I have met, Stephen is charismatic, spiritual, intelligent – and deeply philosophical. If you didn’t know he was an artist, you might think he is a humanitarian.

One of his works, a permanent stone sculpture entitled “The Crossing,” was erected in the ancient port of Bodrum, Turkey, on the Mediterranean. He told me the piece now bears witness to the eternal laws that are constant over time, language and culture – and the great civilizations which unite humanity.

Another of his work in progress, “The Gateway,” is an installation project that explores the frontier between the tangible and the intangible. “Traversing this universal Membrane is at the core of my work,’ he said, “and the search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restraints and see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible.”

Cancer can sometimes feel like that, intangible and out of one’s grasp. The artist speaks of his piece as a way to “look through and beyond.” I took this as a nod to those battling cancer. The Lounge at MSK provides an escape for teenagers who want to be able to live their lives as if they are somewhere else other than a hospital.

“I believe it is up to each patient and family member to choose to see and to take from your piece what you intended to offer them,” Stephen told us.

His work “Whisper,” I believe, is aptly named. Whisper surround hospitals. In Stephen’s whispers, we see something else – a different way to speak up. Among the whispers are the intangible possibility that things can get better, and that people may truly heal.

Meera Gandhi, an activist and CEO of The Giving Back Foundation, is a good friend of us both. Meera helped me gain some insight into Stephen’s life and work:

When I walked into Sloan Kettering and got to the lounge, the yellow art piece “Whisper” by Stephen Burlingham reminded me of the sun. I assumed Stephen was thinking of sunlight and energy to heal when he designed that.

The Lounge has great energy and is so comfortable and has the guitar from The Who hanging on the wall. Stephen shared that he had such joy creating the piece and hoped many teens would be healed of cancer and enjoy great downtime in the relaxed lounge created at MSK.

Meera received our foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2015.

Jeremy Hu, gallerist and global adviser to our foundation, agrees:

When you step into The Lounge at Sloan Kettering, the first thing you notice is the vibrancy of Stephen’s work brightening up the walls, signaling a hopeful tomorrow, one that is cancer-free. There is such peace in Burlingham’s pieces. The main element blends seamlessly with the world around it. It lifts you up.

A challenge we have as a foundation and young global leadership program is to try to relate to our readers the breadth and scope of those thought leaders and global citizens whom we meet during the course of our activities. Stephen Burlingham is perhaps the most intellectually engaging and challenging individual we have encountered. One piece on his hospital installation does not begin to unravel his myriad mysteries.

2016-09-18-1474224765-2027162-079F186D707A499980668C21052A029F.jpg

With this in mind, we have determined to create a series about his artistic achievements. Stephen’s world revolves around CoAu – the iconic markers of the paradigm shift of Humanity’s Consciousness, The Gateway, the physical portal of the new consciousness, and 0M1.org, a community forming around this new consciousness.

As we sat around our dining table, we discussed with Stephen his vision. In short, the artist sees three current parts: Joining the idea/vision, a shared curiosity in Humanity’s future and the cosmos; Collaborating in the realization of the Gateway; and Bringing together thought leaders and interested parties (people, universities, think tanks, etc.). Our young team seemed anxiously eager to absorb his ideas.

A creative life force such as Stephen Burlingham is difficult to encapsulate and even harder to pigeonhole. Young patients living with cancer who find themselves in The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center don’t care – they simply find enormous comfort in his piece “Whisper.”

Our foundation is actively discussing how best we might engage him in the future. Should he be Artist-in-Residence, Humanitarian of the Year, or simply honorary chair of our Global Advisory Board? Whatever role he may one day assume with us, it is clear that Stephen Burlingham is going to change the world.

Obama: Low Turnout By Black Voters Would Be ‘A Personal Insult’

President Barack Obama told a predominantly black audience on Saturday that if they want to protect everything the community has fought for over the past eight years, they can’t let voter turnout fall now that he’s off the ballot.

“I will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy, if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election,” he said at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation conference. “You want to give me a good send-off? Go vote.”

It was Obama’s last speech as president at the annual event, and served as both a reflection on his presidency and a rallying cry for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who spoke earlier in the evening and who he said is the only candidate who can continue his legacy. Although Obama isn’t running for re-election, “Hope is on the ballot, and fear is on the ballot too,” he said.

The line about fear was one of many references to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, a man who tried for years to delegitimize Obama’s presidency by claiming he likely lied about being born in the United States. Trump finally said on Friday that he accepted that Obama was born in the U.S. ― while still lying about his own history as a birther and patting himself on the back for his role in urging the president to release a long-form birth certificate in 2011.

Obama kicked off his speech by feigning relief over Trump’s comments, as he did on Friday.

“There’s an extra spring in my step tonight. I don’t know about you guys, but I am so relieved that the whole birther thing is over,” Obama said. “I mean, ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change ― none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate. And to think that with just 124 days to go, under the wire we got that resolved. That’s a boost for me in the home stretch.”

“In other breaking news, the world is round, not flat,” he added with a laugh.

Obama also mocked Trump’s claim that being a black person in the U.S. is so bad now that black voters should support the Republican because, in Trump’s own words, “What the hell do you have to lose?”

We do have challenges. But we’re not stupid.
President Barack Obama

Trump must have “missed that whole civics lesson about slavery and Jim Crow ― but we’ve got a museum for him to visit so he can tune in,” Obama said, referring to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which he said he’d toured earlier.

“[Trump] says we’ve got nothing left to lose, so we might as well support somebody who has fought against civil rights and fought against equality and who has shown no regard for working people for most of his life,” Obama said. “Well, we do have challenges. But we’re not stupid.”

“We know the progress we’ve made, despite the forces of opposition, despite the forces of discrimination, despite the politics of backlash,” he continued, “And we intend to keep fighting against those forces.”

Clinton’s speech was shorter and not as fiery, and was spent largely praising Obama and first lady Michelle Obama for what they’ve done for the country.

“I know I speak for not just everyone in this room but so many tens of millions of Americans: Mr. President, not only do we know you are an American, you’re a great American and you make us all proud to be Americans too,” Clinton said after receiving the organization’s Trailblazer Award.

She said she would not take for granted the vote of anyone in the room, and contrasted her vision with Trump’s.

“We need ideas, not insults. Real plans to help struggling Americans in communities that have been left out and left behind; not prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said. “We can’t let Barack Obama’s legacy fall into the hands of someone who doesn’t understand that ― whose dangerous and divisive vision for our country will drag us backwards. Instead, we need to come together.”

The 6 Secrets of Self-Control

2016-09-09-1473458162-6578277-TheSixSecretsofSelfControlHP.jpg

What is it about self-control that makes it so difficult to rely on? Self-control is a skill we all possess (honest); yet we tend to give ourselves little credit for it. Self-control is so fleeting for most that when Martin Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed two million people and asked them to rank order their strengths in 24 different skills, self-control ended up in the very bottom slot.

Watch Tommy Boy Explain His Struggles With Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that–a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back.

With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals.

Self-Control Secret #1 – Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason.

Self-Control Secret #2 – Eat

File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance.

Self-Control Secret #3 – Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

Self-Control Secret #4 – Sleep

When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep–every night–is one of the best moves you can make.

Self-Control Secret #5 – Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

Self-Control Secret #6 – Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

Putting These Strategies to Work

The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.

Foot Drop

What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

2016-09-15-1473964901-5244603-Foot4.PNG

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

2016-09-15-1473964936-7620194-foot5.PNG

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

Zombie Spaceship Wasteland: A Book by Patton Oswalt

Zombie Spaceship Wasteland: A Book by Patton Oswalt

Prepare yourself for a journey through the world of Patton Oswalt, one of the most creative, insightful, and hysterical voices on the entertain-ment scene today. Widely known for his roles in the films Big Fan and Ratatouille, as well as the television hit The King of Queens, Patton Oswalt-a staple of Comedy Central-has been amusing audiences for decades. Now, with Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, he offers a fascinating look into his most unusual, and lovable, mindscape. Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remem-bers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, includ-ing a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch. Then there’s the book’s centerpiece, which posits that before all young creative minds have anything to write about, they will home in on one of three story lines: zom-bies, spaceships, or wastelands. Oswalt chose wastelands, and ever since he has been mining our society’s wasteland for perversion and excess, pop culture and fatty foods, indie rock and single-malt scotch. Zombie Spaceship Wasteland is an inventive account of the evolution of Patton Oswalt’s wildly insightful worldview, sure to indulge his legion of fans and lure many new admirers to his very entertaining “wasteland.

It Looks Like Donald Trump Is Done Talking About Birther Stuff

MIAMI ― On Friday evening, Donald Trump talked about how terrible American inner cities are; he talked about how many jobs his energy plan would produce; he talked about how hard he campaigns.

What he didn’t talk about was his statement earlier that day declaring ― after five years of falsely claiming otherwise ― that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

Trump did not allude to the issue at all in 45 minutes of remarks in a state with large African-American and Latino populations. People in both groups have found his leadership in the “birther” movement offensive because it tried to delegitimize the nation’s first black president.

While Trump’s aides and surrogates attempted Friday to blame birtherism on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, Florida Republican Party chairman Blaise Ingoglia said he considers the matter closed.

“Mr. Trump came out and made that statement. That should put it to bed,” Ingoglia said.

Whether minority voters agree with him enough that they help Trump carry the state in November remains to be seen. The GOP nominee has polled exceptionally poorly with both African-American and Latino voters nationally, although the large percentage of Republican-leaning Cuban-American voters in Florida has given him relatively stronger support among Hispanics there than in other key swing states.

At the Miami rally, Trump largely gave what’s become his standard stump speech of late, adding a line promising to help the people of Cuba stand up to their communist leaders and boasting about his Florida golf courses.

“I have a lot of employees, and I pay them a lot of money. And by the way, a lot of African-American employees, a lot of Hispanic employees ― a lot. And they’re very happy,” Trump said. “They like Donald Trump.”

He visited a community center in the city’s Little Haiti neighborhood prior to arriving at the downtown James Knight Center auditorium, which was filled to its 5,500-person capacity with his supporters.

American Men Are Pretty Happy With Their Penises

2016-09-16-1474064741-45703-14austinpowers.w710.h473.2x.jpg

For understandable reasons, society’s conversation about body satisfaction tends to focus on women. Women, it can safely be argued, face a lot more social pressure to look good all the time, to feel ashamed of their bodies, and to harp on minor imperfections.

Men aren’t immune from all that, though. And one particularly painful area where it manifests, according to sexual health researchers, is in insecurity about their penises. This can lead to some bad outcomes. As a team led by Thomas Gaither, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco, point out in a new study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, “Case reports have shown men undergo risky procedures, such as silicon injections, to lengthen their penis and increase penile girth.” In addition, “Genital piercings, silicone injection, and subcutaneous implant are increasingly common and are associated with numerous complications.”

Gaither and his colleagues wanted to better understand how men view their penises, so they conducted what they say is the first nationally representative survey using a newly developed scale called the Index of Male Genital Image, or IMGI. It consists of 14 statements ranked on a score of 1-7 involving penis length, girth, and so on — a score of 1-3 is coded as “dissatisfied,” while 4-7 is coded as satisfied. They got results from 3,996 men, the sample drawn from 18-to-65-year-olds who weren’t institutionalized.

Comparing those who landed in the “satisfied” (greater than 4.0) versus “unsatisfied” (4.0 or lower) buckets when the scores were averaged, the researchers didn’t find any statistically significant differences in penile satisfaction when it came to age, “race, marital status, education, location, income, or sexual partners.” Penile (dis)satisfaction appears to be pretty much constant across these categories.

Overall:

A total of 3433 (85.9%) reported an average greater than 4 per item on the IMGI and thus were classified as satisfied. Men reported highest satisfaction with the shape of their glans (64%), followed by circumcision status (62%), girth of erect penis (61%), texture of skin (60%), and size of testicles (59%). Men reported dissatisfaction with the size of their flaccid penis (27 %), length of erect penis (19%), girth of erect penis (15%), amount of pubic hair (14%), and amount of semen (12%). Men reported neutrality with the scent of their genitals (44%), genital veins (43%), location of urethra (42%), color of genitals (40%), and amount of pubic hair (36%). Of note, those who were extremely dissatisfied (score of 1 or 2) reported dissatisfaction with their flaccid penis (10.0%), length of erect penis (5.7 %), and girth of erect penis (4.5%).

There were some decent-size differences in terms of the sexual experiences of men who were satisfied versus dissatisfied with their penises. Those who were satisfied were less likely to be sexually active (73.5 percent versus 86.3 percent), and engaged in less daily and weekly sexual activity. There were also slight but statistically significant differences in the percentage of dissatisfied versus satisfied men who reported having had vaginal or receptive oral sex (85.2 percent versus 89.5 percent, and 61 percent versus 66.2 percent). The obvious question here is what’s causing what: To what extent are men who are dissatisfied with their penises less likely to seek out sex as a result of their insecurity? A correlational self-report study can’t answer that, nor can it answer whether these mens’ likes and dislikes were shared by their sexual partners.

It’s interesting that a sizable minority of men reported dissatisfaction with their testicle size or glans shape. On the one hand, in a survey like this you are explicitly asking about certain features, so these responses don’t mean that they are wandering around obsessing over this stuff. (It would be another thing entirely if you asked men to generate an open-ended list of body features they didn’t like and these kept popping up.) But on the other: It’s an interesting comparison to what women go through, because it highlights the fact that at least some of the things both men and women worry about probably aren’t, in fact, of much import to anyone else. If you’re a guy, the odds that a partner is going to care that much about the size of your testicles or the “shape of your glans” — that’s something I can honestly say I had never even thought about before reading this article, and which the researchers note “has little anatomic variability” — are probably pretty low.

More broadly, the main takeaway, as a first-pass attempt at understanding this stuff, is that men mostly feel pretty happy with their penises. Which can maybe explain the epidemic of unsolicited photos.

Elizabeth Warren Just Trolled Wells Fargo’s CEO So Hard

John Stumpf is the chairman of the Wells Fargo board of directors. This prestigious body is tasked with holding company executives accountable for misdeeds, and the chairmanship is its premier position. So it makes sense that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) would ask Stumpf what punishments the board is considering levying against company executives in the wake of a major scandal.

Late last week, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau levied a $ 185 million penalty against Wells Fargo for creating literally millions of fake accounts for its own customers ― replete with bogus fees ― in an effort to meet aggressive internal sales targets. On Friday, Warren sent a letter to Stumpf asking if the board is considering clawing back pay to top executives as a result of the mess.

But here’s the thing. Stumpf is not only chairman of the board at Wells Fargo. He’s also the bank’s chief executive officer. When Warren asks him to re-evaluate prior executive payouts, she’s asking him to consider ponying up part of his own fortune. She and her four Democratic colleagues in the Senate who co-signed her letter to Stumpf weren’t shy about its implications for his own bank account.

“Will Wells Fargo take action to claw back any or all parts of any other senior executive’s incentive compensation ― including your own ― as a result of the settlement with the CFPB and other entities?” they wrote.

Much of the letter focuses on the pay received by former Wells Fargo Senior Executive Vice President of Community Banking Carrie Tolstedt, who left the bank in July with a compensation package worth up to $ 125 million in stock options and awards. Tolstedt reportedly had authority over the 5,300 employees who the bank said it fired over the course of five years for creating bogus accounts.

The fact that thousands of employees were involved in creating millions of accounts over several years, of course, suggests that company-wide policies implemented by top managers may have had something to do with the trouble. As CEO, Stumpf had authority over Tolstedt and everyone else who worked at Wells Fargo.

Stumpf received $ 19.3 million from Wells Fargo in both 2014 and 2013. He was the highest-paid big bank CEO in 2012, pocketing $ 22.9 million, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. He has served as the company’s CEO since the summer of 2007.

Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) all signed onto the letter, the full text of which can be read here.

How We Unintentionally Harm Our Children (And Ourselves)

2016-09-15-1473952423-8177006-photo145003758677400cb81edd142.jpeg

Without intending to do harm, we damage our children. We don’t want to do it — we don’t know we’re doing it — but it’s happening.

To survive, our children “forsake their true selves.”

I haven’t stopped thinking about that sentence since I heard it.

Did my parents unintentionally do this to me?

Are you doing it to your children?

That sentence came from an interview I did on my podcast the Art of Authenticity with Dr. Shefali, a clinical psychologist who specializes in the blend of Eastern philosophy and Western psychology. On the show she explained how we disconnect from our authentic truth in childhood, how we may be parenting in a way that is disconnecting our children from their truth, and what she calls Conscious Parenting as a way to prevent it.

After talking with Dr. Shefali, I could not help but think about the moment that I disconnected from my authentic truth and how many people out there may have suffered the same fate.

My defining moment occurred in 8th grade. I was walking down the hallway, chatting with my friends, hoping that my outfit was on point with the latest 1980s style, when I entered into a conversation with a bunch of boys. I can’t remember the exact words that my good friend uttered about how uncool it is when a girl beats you in sports, but it was the moment I let go of my authentic voice.

In 1984, it wasn’t that cool to beat the boys, plus my parents weren’t exactly the sporty types. For me, sports weren’t something to do to get exercise or to make friends, they were part of my authentic truth. It was part of my identity. As soon as I could walk, I ran. I ran after anything that moved and soon I was playing football with my older brother’s friend, and winning. This wasn’t a hobby, it was part of who I was, who I am.

But it wasn’t popular and so I let go of myself for what I believed benefited others. I believed I would get their approvals, but that was an assumption on my part – a costly assumption.

The crazy part was that I continued to play varsity soccer and varsity tennis, but what mattered was that I no longer cared. To be “cool” and to align with my parent’s values, I took on the role that it didn’t matter – but it mattered.

It mattered a lot because I gave up on my connection to a sacred part of myself. I let go of my belief that I had a right to my authentic voice, my truth.

I lost myself. I fell in with the wrong crowd. I can only describe the sensation this way: my feet felt like they didn’t touch the ground. My authentic self slid into the background, out of mind’s eye, in exchange I got my parent’s, friend’s and culture’s approvals. Slowly, what replaced that authentic self was a shell – an idea of what my life ‘should be’, not what I wanted it to be.

And that was that. “I don’t care.” became the mantra of my life. My life decisions were outsourced to the “world”. The result was a life that never felt quite right and a sense of overwhelm that followed me everywhere.

Because here is the thing: When you don’t create a life that is entirely of your making you never feel quite right and life takes on this overwhelming feeling. It can manifest in many ways: small decisions become difficult to make; saying ‘no’ becomes difficult; even saying ‘yes’ becomes confusing and frustrating.

But the result is always the same. Resentments, anger, and anxiety take center stage in your life.

It wasn’t until 20 years later that I began to bring my truth to the forefront of my life’s choices. It hasn’t been easy. I re-read all of my favorite philosophy books on what an authentic life means and I applied the ancient concepts one by painstaking one to my life.

But now my feet touch the ground. I never let go of my truth. I hold on tight, even when it isn’t popular.

Do you remember a moment when you let go of a defining part of yourself to fit in, to get your parents approvals, to get the love you crave? Do you feel overwhelmed daily and have a sense that your life is just not quite right?

Clip from Podcast Art of Authenticity with Dr. Shefali

[00:00:16.3] LC: If that doesn’t happen and the parent is putting that ego self onto the child, I’ve heard you describe that the child sort of splits away, that they protect their deeper self?

[00:00:27.3] Dr. Shefali: Yeah, they have to survive, right? We all have to survive. So one of the ways of surviving. So the main ways that we forsake or abandon our true self or that poor true self didn’t even have a chance to fully develop because it was having to constantly fend off the projections of the environment and the more unconscious the parent is, the greater they put these projections, this heavy mantel, the second skin, the third skin on the child. So the child will never really develop their true skin.

It was such an honor to have Dr. Shefali on my podcast, The Art of Authenticity. The quote was a clip from our conversation on the show. I wanted to highlight it because I thought her words were so powerful, so meaningful that they have blown me away ever since we talked. My work focuses on how to shed the layers that weigh your authentic voice down and how to reconnect to your truth, the truth that is not broken, but only buried under the impostor voices from culture, family, and the challenges in life. And so when Dr. Shefali’s showed up on the podcast with an explanation of the origins of an inauthentic life, I was blown away.

Here’s why.

Without intending to do harm, parents project their own images so heavily onto their kids that the child never developed their true skin, their true selves. Why? To survive, the child has to give up on their true self to satisfy the parent and keep the love the child so deeply desires. The desire for approval, love, safety outweighed the child’s desire to remain true to themselves.

The outcome – we can’t decide on dinner, we can’t decide where to live, even what to do with our lives in a way that feels completely at peace within ourselves. Most of us wonder ‘what is wrong with us’. We wonder why we can’t feel at ease in our life choices – it’s because we haven’t developed a connection to that deeper self.

It’s simple in theory to speak your truth, yet many of us convince ourselves day-to-day that we should do things that are not aligned with our truth. Why? Dr. Shefali, clinical psychologist who’s been on Oprah and travels the country explaining these ideas, is sharing the answer with us. It’s because we never developed our authentic self; we never learned how to speak our truth. Our family’s projections were so strong that we got lost in those projections and we never got the opportunity to develop that deeper sense of self.

We split away from our truth and now we make decisions from our minds. Our minds are filled with pros and cons, how to get other’s people approvals, and all these incredible skills which can be helpful, even necessary in our lives.

But when we don’t have that connection to our deeper self, how do we figure out what it is that we want? How do we build a life that makes sense for us?

[00:03:04.3] Dr. Shefali: Yes but as parents, we have to seize the power we have in the moment and it’s in these ordinary little moments where we get to say, “Okay, what matters right now? Does it matter that my child feel rejected for an external validation of a grade or can I separate the external validation at this moment and let my child step into their own journey, their own body and their own relationship with their experience versus me putting it onto them?”

So it’s in those very subtle moments where we get to make choices and step back and say as parents, whatever your daughter or your son’s name is, Jake, Jack and this is of course after they’re seven years old or six years old so they can comprehend and you say to them, “Look, these are the things that go into getting this result. I can help you get these results. This is the effort that it’s going to take. These are the conditions that I will create in the home.

Such as, I will create a quiet place, I will be there to assist you, I will give you healthy nourishing food so you can get to that goal, I would drive you to that place that will help you get that goal or I will give you the tools and skills in that subject matter, whatever it is. But at the end of the day, you’re going to have to put in the effort and care enough to get that goal. I’m not invested in that goal because I think you’re perfect and whole and complete the way you are. If you want that goal, I am there to assist you.”

And always providing that assistance-ship and the space and the room for the kid to grow into it but not telling the kid inadvertently or unconsciously that, “I will approve of you, only if you create that external goal in your life.” I think parents sometimes forget how important it is to teach children that, “I see you, I care about you and you matter to me whether you get that A grade, the B grade, you’re a soccer star or you’re just in your room reading a book or doing nothing. I validate you and I honor you for who you are.”

Dr. Shefali continues to share such pearls of wisdom. This simple, simple, simple point, “I’m here to assist you in your life but I honor you and validate for who you are today. I see you, I care about you, you matter.” Unfortunately, most of us didn’t get that message as children. The message we received was: we’re only good enough for the grades we get, for the things we do, for the projection that we put forward into the world, but not who we are as a human being.

And when we aren’t valued for the person we are and we focus on the self that was created from the projections placed on us, we lose connection with who we are. We can’t see ourselves anymore so we rely on what other people have told us about ourselves and what makes us happy. Our life choices rely on what we believe to be the quote “smart choice in life”. The result: we resort to a life designed from our minds.

I see this every day.

So say you want to change jobs, so you come to me for coaching and you want to talk about how to make a change. As we begin our session, I ask, “what do you want.” Client after client doesn’t know how to answer that question. The connection to their truth has been lost.

Because they haven’t validated who they are, they haven’t felt as if that is enough, so they try to make sense of their life choices. They try to make smart decisions.

But you can’t make a choice for yourself when you don’t know yourself. If you haven’t had a chance to embody your truth, your voice, how can you make life choices to figure out how to change jobs or how to find the relationship of your dreams?

But you can, you can take steps to find that voice. You just need to learn how. Like a child who’s learning how to walk for the first time, you have to learn how to find your truth, step by step until your truth is your first instinct – the unconscious default, not the voice that’s buried deep beneath the mind’s chaotic and misleading views.

[00:07:03.7] Dr. Shefali: Okay, so first, the disconnect will show up in many external ways. First, life doesn’t go your way, your boss is upset with you and your spouse is not working cooperatively and your friend was rude to you. First, the cracks starts showing up in external ways and our instinct is to blame everyone, right? “My boss is mean. My friend was mean. My spouse is mean. My child is disobedient, and the weather is not being cooperative.”

So we blame the whole external realm for our inner discontent and so this is the first sign that we are internally disconnected. When our external world begins to show up with loud resulting, “I’m not helping you, I’m not supporting you. I’m not working well with you,” this is how the internal disconnect shows up. So usually at this point, people kind of break down and they go seek help and therapy and that’s a good thing and then the wise guy therapist, the parent, the friend kind of tells that person, “You know, these are indications. These are wake up calls for you to go, “Whoa, what inside me is disconnected and not aligned?”

Okay, so first you have to pay heed to the disconnect, right? Is my first message to you. So if you have a conflict after conflict with your child, they heed to that. That’s a sign that there is something disconnected within you and of course, it is easy to blame the kid and punish the kid and discipline the kid but then what? At the end of the day, the only person who has power to change is you. So you have to then start saying to yourself, “How can I start taking that pause in the moment and look in the mirror and not react?”

The first step is not to react and the step to not react means to take a pause. The way to take a pause is to invite yourself to say, “For the next three days, I’m just going to enter silent mode and just pay attention. So if my child is being rude to me, I’m not going to react and say, “Why are you being rude to me? I’m going to punish you. I’m going to discipline you,” I am just going to listen and say, “I hear you. I can see that you’re upset. I’m going to watch and see how I make you upset and I’m going to pay attention.”

Just the willingness to turn inward and say, “I am going to pay more attention even though I wanted to yell at you and scream at you and make you feel bad for making me feel bad. Instead, just not taking it personally for a moment and pay attention and begin to see how I’m contributing to your distress.” So instead of blaming the world, we begin to turn our eyes inward and begin to ask the pivotal question which is, “How am I contributing to this upheaval in my life?”

The key thing is first to gain the awareness that you are not coming from your true self. Then, take full responsibility for your behaviors. Once you have the awareness, and you take full responsibility you can begin to learn how to operate from your authentic self.

Interview after interview, book after book, I see the same theme. Nothing can start without awareness of what’s going on with you. Our first instinct, as Dr. Shefali is saying – and so many brilliant, wonderful people have said – is we stay focused on the world around us, not our deeper instincts. In part because we haven’t developed that deeper sense of self and in part because we think we won’t like that deeper sense of self.

So we focus on the external world. We blame. We get stuck on being a martyr and a victim. We are upset with what we believe other people may have done to us. But this is your work. It is your work to honor who you are. Maybe you weren’t seen as a child, maybe you weren’t told you mattered, but now it’s up to you. You must start the journey by turning inward and creating the awareness of what’s going on with you.

If you stay in the blame or victim space, you’ll never be free. You’ll never rise up and you’ll never have the empowered life that you desire. When you create the awareness and check in with what’s going on with you, you can then begin to grow. You can begin to learn about who you are and who you are not. And those disempowered voices of the mind that tell you, “You’re not enough, you are not capable enough, you’re not powerful enough, you’re not lovable enough,” for who you are, must be managed or they will be your undoing.

Regardless of how many pressing tasks we may have on our to-do list, we can (and do) always find time to lurk on social media (or whatever breed of distraction you prefer)–even if we have a zillion more important things we should be doing.

The good news? Procrastination can actually be good for you. According to an article in The Atlantic, there’s such a thing as productive procrastinating (get excited).

The story points out that Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, classifies procrastination as a habit rather than a moral failing (which, if you’re like me, is what you call it as you freak out over a last-minute assignment you have to do yet find yourself scrolling through Instagram).

Duhigg says procrastination involves a cue, a routine, and a reward. It goes something like this: An overflowing inbox (the cue) might lead you to think about checking social media (the routine)–and the idea of a refreshing cognitive break by checking your news feed seems like a reward. But the “cognitive break” often isn’t all that refreshing–instead, it just wastes a lot of time. (So true.)

The key to taking control of your procrastination is to notice “the routine”–whatever automatic habit is your go-to–and observe it while it’s happening. If you start to notice when you whip out your phone or start typing facebook.com into your browser, you have a better chance of deciding to do something useful instead.

Since that’s easier said than done, you can procrastinate better by setting what Duhigg calls an “implementation intention,” where you write a list of other things you need to do that have nothing to do with the task at hand–for example, Marie Kondo-ing your apartment or calling your cable company. When you start getting the take-a-break itch, do things on that list. (And step away from the Snapchat…)

If you get used to this, you could become a “structured procrastinator”: someone who procrastinates by doing actual work rather than Googling your crush, browsing Facebook, or keeping up with the Kardashians. Talk about #goals.
